Black Bear books
« on: March 25, 2016, 09:41:10 PM »
I'm looking to buy a couple books on black bear hunting. Plan to order Douglas Boze's book. Wondering if anyone has read any of the books by Richard Smith. He has 3 or 4 on Amazon. Or any other suggestions. Thanks

Thanks for the support. I've read the one by Kathy Etling ...mediocre, imho. Haven't read the ones by Richard smith, but I plan on it. Education of a bear hunter has some interesting insite.

I've learned a lot just from your posts and some of the other guys on here. Just finished your stickied spring bears thread from 2012. Great thread! It's nice to come on here when I've seen certain things in the field and have guys like you to help me put the pieces together. Thanks. Anyway I just got paid so I'm ordering your book this weekend or Monday. Is Lulu a reputable site? (I never heard of it).

Are you talking about the book by Ralph Flowers?

I really enjoyed Ralph Flowers books, it's not so much of a how to but more telling stories.

As an educational book I have always found this to be a must read for bear hunters.  It is not a recent publication and doesn't exactly pertain to the northwest.  But it is one of my favorites!

Yes, lulu is 100 percent legit. And yes, I was referring to the book by Ralph flowers. Lulu is a site for self publishing, which is what I did. It is on Amazon however, if you prefer.

Rad, that was the first bear book I ever read, back when baiting was still legal.
Still have it laying around here somewhere...

Here is an older bear book I acquired some time ago with a section of reading specific to Black Bears.

Thanks fellas for some good book leads. Billy The Kid Rock put me onto Flowers books a few years ago. Got all 3 of them. Also Ralph's mentor Big Bill Hewitt in Born Under A Stump is short but good.

When Bears East Adventures forum was discontinued, all the thousands of posts just evaporated. A new forum, Bear Quest Obsession started up a few months ago. Still small in size as a replacement for BEA. It is made up of both bear Hunter's from the US & Canada. Evenly balanced between bow & gun Hunter's. They recommend a couple of books not covered here. They also cover bait & hound hunt'in which was taken from us. Just mentioning it as another bear Hunter's source. It does lack the WA emphasis though.

Got Doug's book "No Bait Just Bears" via Fedex Wednesday.  Enjoyed reading it. Learned some more. The pictures are great. Nice job.
