Youth Season Scouting Report - Stevens Co
« on: March 28, 2016, 11:44:53 AM »
I'm bringing my 13 year old daughter over for her first turkey hunt next weekend.  Any input on how the birds are behaving?  Are they starting to gobble?  Thanks in advance for your input.

Birds are just really starting to break up around my house.  Still lots of large winter groups around, but starting to notice more and more straggler groups moving away.  Took a drive up to the summit of Addy Cedonia road and didn't see any birds at much altitude.  Lots and lots of Jakes this year.  Very good hatch last year.  Roads seem to be in very good shape but still some snow and mud in the shaddy areas up higher.  I wouldn't say they're in full blown mating mood yet, but I'm guessing that it won't be hard to call in some of the groups of crazy jakes I've seen running around. Weather is supposed to be very good and while I haven't been down to try it yet, I heard fishing in Lake Roosevelt is good right now.  Bring your fishing rods along.

thanks for the information guys.  I've been hunting turkeys in the area for 12 years and most of my go-to spots are in the hills using the run N' gun strategy.  Sounds like this trip I need to stay in the valleys close to farm country.  Good news on the hatch survival rates and jake population.
