« on: January 29, 2009, 08:43:00 PM »
if you are using a distress call and you start howling, will cats still come in or are you committing to coyotes only?

I've never done it but I think if they come in They might be more causious. If you want a couger. Try cat yawels and screaming And throw in a meow.( yes the do that too) They do all that and it should be mating season.  :chuckle:

you could Howl first like normal. i will sunday. when i cougar call i start out with a woodpecker sound for 10 minute's or so. rustle up the bird's and maybe a bobcat quick. then i play goat in distress for 10 to 15 minute's. then cougar in heat for 2 to 3 minute's. then back to goat in distress or fawn. and i mix hand calling in that is using a foxpro Fury and hand call's. when i use jut a hand call. i use mainly distress. in jan and feb i howl to just not to much. you can over howl very easy i only do a couple. if you get one close work him like a bull elk. copy him if need be and you can get closer. if your after cougar Howling first would be fine. I don't know about the question, but as a coug I can say I would go to the bar and get a beer as soon as the cold weather became uncomfortable while hunting...

Ok, I'll put down my beer and give you my experience.  I hunted for 5 years in college for predators and coyotes a lot.  I never called in a cat with a distress call.  Except a bob...   :brew:

Not me.  I predator hunted in a lot of areas that didn't or wouldn't hold them often.  That's probably more the reason than anything.

:'( Not me ...but my wife has called in 2. The first was about 10 years ago during elk season. It came into her cow calls and she got 2 arrows into it. then this last fall one was screaming up the hill from her stand so she did the squeaking with  her  kissing the back of her hand. It took about 20 minuets  for it to come sneaking down the trail to her stand. She shot it at 5 yards straight down threw the shoulders and the arrow came out the guts ! :yike:
