Got my pup on her first birds

Took Ruby out for her first live bird exposure today.  Overall I think it went really well, she's my first bird dog so the whole thing is as new to me as it is to her!  Here's a video of her working a bird.  The pigeons weren't the strongest fliers, but I'll take whatever I can get at this point.  We just started whoa training a few weeks ago, I initially stopped her from running in with the check cord but loosened up on it after whoaing her and she held well, if that pigeon so much as moved a muscle it would have been game over though

We did some dead bird fetches and she found those no problem, considering how tall the grass was I was impressed, the stuff was taller than her.  She was pretty pumped after it was all said and done.  I had a hard time wrangling her back into the truck

First off I'm not a pro.     It's a great idea to film your sessions, so you can go back and correct your mistakes.  However, I can't make out what you are doing very well, because the camera is too far away.  One of the handy cams, or a second person filming would help.

Beg, borrow, buy, or steal a launcher!  A launcher gives you much better control of the bird at this stage.  Bring your pup in on a check cord from downwind.   As soon as the pup hits the scent launch the bird and let the pup chase it.  You have to have pretty strong flyers.  The pup will learn that if it pressures the birds they fly, and if pup chases the birds pup can't catch them.  No more than a few exposures per session.  In just a few sessions, depending on the dog, it should begin to point.  That's really over simplified, and it's only one of many methods.

BTW from what I could see your session went pretty well.

I don't think I'll ever reach the production quality of your videos   A launcher will come in the somewhat near future.  I'm not in too big of a hurry though because I want to make sure she has plenty of bird exposure before I start introducing birds via a launcher.

Video production quality?  LOL!  Lily does all the editing.  I just strap the camera to my head, and start filming.
