High Buck Hunt
« on: April 12, 2016, 08:22:02 PM »
Was doing a little map scouting and had a few places picked out.  I have the trial of onxmaps on my phone noticed the NeoTrek maps showed a lot more trails.  It was being slow and not loading map detail for whatever reason. So I decided to check out NeoTreks website.  After looking around a bit I clicked on the Land Use map and noticed that I was in a wilderness area.  I didnt find much info regarding hunting(if legal) in the wilderness area.  Eventually came across the High Buck Hunt.  Is the high buck hunt the only time you can hunt in these areas? Or is that just for Modern Firearm/Muzzle loader tag holders?

Not familiar with that wilderness area but there are gmu's in all the wilderness areas i.e. Alpine lakes 249, glacier peak 244 "Clark". Hope this helps. Most are open to all weapons durning general seasons other than the high hunt.
Happiness is being in the woods!!!

Here's an awesome link I found provided by University of Montana. It's an interactive wilderness map for all of the states. Great for finding boundaries and trails.

Wilderness area are legal to hunt in given that the state (WDFW) as set a season in that area. Its no an exact overlay but for the most part wilderness areas are in a given GMU (GMU 203 Pasayten for instance). The high buck hunt is an early opportunity to for rifle and muzzle loaders to hunt curtain wilderness areas... not GMU's. During the general season many of those same wilderness areas are open to hunt again because those GMU's are open.

Archery equipment can be used in either Muzzle loader or Modern seasons but during all high buck hunts hunter orange is required. Many of the Wilderness areas are open for archery season because those GMU's are included in the early archery season. Again, if the wilderness area is open for High Buck at the same time as it is open for early season archery, hunter orange is required.

Wilderness.net is a great reference if you are looking for trails, boundaries etc.

249 is crowded in September. They threw all the high buck guys in with archery elk guys and half of Seattle going up for hiking into the lakes. Would be better off going during the modern season.
