My 9 and 11 year old sons decided last minute they wanted to hunt this year and passed their tests today. They are super excited so now I'm going to rearrange a few trips and try to get them at least a shot opportunity a public land antlerless area for modern firearm. I want to keep them interested. ;)  I spent a couple years learning GMU101 which would have worked but last year it got so burned where we were hunting that the few remaining public areas were swamped with people and most of the deer I saw were on private property. This was east of Curlew. I was kind of looking at GMU117 but haven't spent anytime in that area and want to find a good chunk of public land with a good number of whitetailed does. Both of my sons can hike so we prefer to get off the roads a bit but even a starting point or area to look at would be greatly appreciated. Also If anyone has another idea outside of that GMU I would be open to other possibilities. I'm just hoping to find a spot so I can get at least one or two camping/scouting trips in before fall. PMs work great. Thanks all!

This snip is from the regs...

I will for sure. I believe youth odds tend to be better but you never know.

When I started with my oldest daughter it was every year to get drawn, now it's usually ever two years.

Don't be afraid to knock on doors. They're usually youth/senior antlerless areas for a reason! Deer are like vermin to lots of those landowners.

I'd spend some time researching the SE GMUs  :twocents:

The Colville National Forest in NE WA is huge, just google it and get a map online or at any forest office. We had a huge die off due to blue tongue last fall that greatly reduced herds but those NE units will still probably be some of the best in the state.

The youth/senior/disabled hunt dates for NE WA were incorrect in the pamphlet and have been corrected by WDFW.

Thanks for all the tips and advice. I'm going to continue to do some research and get a spring scouting trip in here soon. Maybe camp at a few different spots and hike around.

139 & 142 are a perfect place for youth antlerless hunts. Don't go expecting to get a buck tag for your self. Call the regional office for help if you need to. Last year was the first time I've ever been turned down for youth hunts just because of the huge die off.
