cap and ball pistol legality ?

I just recently picked up a 1858 remington percussion cap revolver replica at an estate sale for 150$ . It has a 12" barrel and is in .44 caliber . Its a single action 6 shot percussion cap pistol . Is this legal for deer hunting during muzzleloader season ? Im a little confused by the regs . Thanks !

Probably not during ML as it is not "loaded from the muzzle" by the definition of ML, also any legal gun with more than one barrel can only be loaded with one round.

I also see that it says ML handguns must have a barrel at least 8 inches long and use 45 grain equivalents of black powder.    This in the Equipment and Hunting Methods section of the regs.  Your's meets the barrel length but I'm pretty sure it won't even fit 45 grains into it.

So, nope, not legal during muzzleloader season.

They may be used for forest grouse, rabbits, and hares.

I would not recommend loading more than 1 chamber at a time also. They have been known for multiple chambers going off at once.

We have found that multiple chambers generally go off when the wrong percussion caps are used. Make sure to use #10 caps on that pistol, NOT #11. They're a ton of fun to shoot, so enjoy!

I saw where you seemed to laugh at the statement of one post that stated
tight fitting caps and lube over the balls....that is normally 90% of the problem with other chambers going off is people get in a hurray and cut corners and fail to put a seal cover of lube on top of the seated ball in the chamber. Just my thoughts!

I agree with the statement about #10 caps. I use Remington  10's caps, on my Navy 36 and my long rifles,  with excellent results.

 I also use crisco as a lube on the cylinder.
