Oh how fun it would be if I were to ever draw this unit for goat.

Working on a career so I can do it in BC. I have a better shot at saving 12k than drawing in WA while I'm still vertical.  :chuckle:

I missed a couple years in the late 90's when I moved back to Oregon for a job.  Besides those missed couple it has been a near constant dream since 1986 when I first applied in the archery only draw.  Two time runner up in the raffle too!  Now not only do I dream about drawing a goat tag, but also dream about being able to get to the top of the mountain and back without looking at the inside of a body bag.  Not sure which would be the biggest challenge!

Sure would be something special!  Hope you guys can get lucky in the draw while you are still young.  But don't wait 23 years of WA draws before going to BC like I did.  It would have been so much more enjoyable had I done it in my youth.  Likely more successful too.  Better a Canadian goat than no goat at all!

I still dream of a WA goat nearly every day.  I can't think of an OIL tag I would like more...even if it risks a heart attack or stroke these days.  I think it would be well worth it!
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

There is something to be said about getting a goat tag when you're young. Then again, I wish I had drawn my goat tag a little later. I was in my early twenties when I drew my goat tag. I honestly can say I did not make the best of this once in a lifetime opportunity. Of course, I drew my tag the first year it became a once in a lifetime tag, I think '99?? Even putting in for the unit, I was uninformed and inexperienced. I put in and drew a corall pass tag. Now, I had grown up deer and elk hunting up there and always saw goats, and even some big ones. So, I naturally put in for that unit. Probably not one of the better units around. Although, I do know there are and were a few big goats up there. I did scout pretty hard during the summer, but honestly, I had very little knowledge of what I was looking for. Seeing goats was no problem.
I hunted by myself for the first few weekends and ended up almost getting snowed out of there by the time the season was coming close to an end. I found what I thought was a good goat and shot it. I made my way over to it and out of the draw runs a goat that looked twice as big, body and horns. All I could do was stand over my 8 1/2" young billy and look over across the draw 100yards at probably a 10" tank of a billy.
I guess I'm just saying I know I would have made it a much better hunt and would have appreciated it much more if I had drawn the tag ten or so years later in my life.

by far my most desired oil tag, each year when I'm elk and deer hunting, I see dozens of goats. compared to the other oils they live in absolute gods country. like whats already been said I hope I draw a tag in my lifetime.

Knowledge of scoring a goat doesn't come overnight. That's for sure. I feel like I am getting better scoring goats with the 2 hours that I have been spending looking at them a week. I need a lot more time behind the binos though. I have the locations of goats down in my notes of the units I put in for, but now it is time to step it up a notch and start putting an imaginary tape on the billies everytime I look at them.

I understand what you're saying link.  A person may understand that oil means once in a lifetime, but really when you draw, that's the only chance you have of hunting a goat in Washington. Make the best of it as it truly is a once in a lifetime deal. Get to know the animal you are hunting. Spend as much time as possible hunting when you have the tag.

You may have to bite the bullet and buy the raffle or go to Canada. It is a fools hope to think you'll ever get drawn in WA. I know you know that.

I'm 27 with near max points I believe may have missed a year, being so young I still have no hope of ever drawing but someone has to draw and waste 15 bucks on much more useless things, so my name will go in the hat and save money for a real opportunity as well.  By far, my favorite mountain animal to watch!

8 1/2 vs 10 inch still a trophy I don't care just give me a tag.
