Smoke Pole Tom
« on: April 17, 2016, 07:55:09 PM »
Took the old smoke pole for a walk today. I was walking this ridge line stopping to call here and there, at the end of the ridge line a Tom gobbled, the time was around 2pm, so I started calling to him. He was real hot gobbled every time I called. This went on for about 20 min.s and he shut up. There was a large draw between him and me so I figured he didn't want to cross it. So I moved to the point of the draw and sat down. I didn't even have to call, he popped up right when I sat down. He was coming in quite strutting right to me, I dropped the hammer on him at around 20yds and the cap didn't go off. He stopped at the sound of the hammer and looked around, he broke into strut again. I cocked the hammer again and it went off this time.

Not trying to take anything away from that Tom, but that is a pretty piece of wood used on that stock.  Sharp looking M/L!

:yeah:  Not to mention the beautiful meadow, I want to build my house there.   Nice job! I took all three WA birds a few years ago, with the muzzleloader. And something went wrong every time. But never had so much fun in my life.. Including bad caps...

Nice bird! What kind of caps were you using?
They are German Dynamit Nobel No. 1075 plus. They are a hot cap #11 I cleaned out the hammer mechanism, it was dirty. I don't think it hit the cap hard enough.

I'm not much into front stuffers.  But some day I would like to bag a turkey with a hillbilly smoothbore and some black powder.

Congratulations on a beautiful bird

I had to come back and look at that bird again.  He's darn near perfect.  I've never mounted a bird before.  That one would have me thinking about it.

Great job. Is there a Turkey shot for muzzys? Or do you just throw a slug of lead at them?
