See-through rings: quality ok?

I just bought a 30-06 BLR and was in the process of buying see-through rings. Dealer warned me off, though, and said I should do some research before buying. I've been digging around for reviews, etc. but haven't had much luck.

Anyone here got a yay or nay on them?

I wouldn't use them because then to me the scope would be useless...it would be mounted too high. Especially on a handy lever rifle like that I'd want the scope mounted as low as possible for quick shooting. You don't want to be having to raise your head up off the stock in order to get the right sight picture through the scope. If you really want to have the option of open sights maybe forgo the scope altogether, and go with a good quality peep sight like these:  http://www.xssights.com/store/rifle.html

Ive got them on my 30-06,used them for years never had a problem,if you break your scope or something like that you still can hunt,

Personally,you couldn't give me a set of see through rings.  The scope is going to be what you use for shooting anyway.  With those see-through contraptions, bobcat is right, the scope will be too high, you will have to raise your head up from the stock into an unnatural position which will slow down the shot and increase felt recoil.  Get yourself a good variable with less than 2x magnification if you are concerned with close in shots.  Get some Butler creek flip ups or get a scope with rainguard or similar if you are worried about the rain.  Try and use bases that will let you see over them and use the irons in the unlikely event the scope dies.

NO WAY...Scope sits too high, poor cheek weld, better factor in a higher sight distance.  NO THANKS if I am every in a situation where my scope might be damaged and I have to use my iron sights then I am packing the wrong gun.  Come to think of it none of my hunting rifles even have sights.  The ones that did have been removed.

I had to put them on my wifes 6.5x55 swedish Mauser, simply to prevent having to turn the bolt by a gunsmith, and she won't even try using the peep sights.  I thought there would be nothing but trouble, but they have worked very well and you can still use the peep if you wanna.  She shoots that gun light's out with the scope, it is really surprising seeing how high she has to hold her head, but it works just fine.

I have one rifle set up with Weaver Pivot Mounts a Savage 99 375 Win that I use for trailing deer in the black marshes of northern MN & WI.  The scope Weaver K-1.5 pivots to the left and allows the use of the open sights.  The scope mounts low and hold zero very well.  Sneaking through those swamps alot of snow is falling from the branches and always seams to land on a lens.  I've never needed the swing away feature but it was there.  All my other rifles have standard rings on them.

I have them on my 30.06 and I can't seem to keep my Leupold zeroed. It will be fine at the range all through the summer, but it seems like about half way through the modern season, after bouncing around in the pick up and getting drug through the timber, it loses it's zero. I guess it could be the scope, but it's a Leupold, and It was fine with the former rings. I am changing back to standard rings shortly.

i used to shoot a 742 remington with extra high see through rings. the reason for them for me was so i could shoot up close and personal in the thick brush with the iron sights and use the scope if needed.(this was used back east) i could shoot pretty well through the scope and through the irons. that was my first gun and i hunted with it for  a long time, but have now retired it and use a different rifle with low rings...much more solid and more accurate for me.

No, no, no.  Mount your rifle scope as low as possible.  If you want some iron sites or something for closer range look into the top rails that replace one of the tops of the rings.

I have used see thru rings on many rifles over the years without problems..... What are we talking on inch increase in height? Millions of guys cant be wrong.

I would rather have my scope As close to the barrel as possible. Guess a lot of people use the see thru, but not me. I would not have a set of see thru on any of my rifles.

It's not only the height, it's the integrity of the ring being weakened by the hole in the middle.  That and most see through rings are junk because the respectable mount/ring producers KNOW see through rings can't maintain the quality control of a solid low ring.  Therefore, the only producers are substandard mount/ring makers to start with.

As for the "inch increase in height" a 56mm objective is already slightly over two inches in height.  Now the more weight you put on top of a small piece of metal gives it more of an opportunity to shift and move.  Stick with the low, solid, good quality rings.

I never had a point of impact move off after carrying by the scope, the occasional knocking around of hunting, these with simple elcheapo rings.

Yep. Never had a problem with the "handle".
