Fun, but no luck
« on: April 20, 2016, 09:19:28 AM »
Took a little different tack this year.  Spotted (for the 3rd year in a row) a big old tom and decided to hunt him exclusively. Boy is he smart and so are the 4 hens that run with him. Passed a bunch of jakes and a couple of nice toms but it was worth it.  Chased him for 4 days, got close once, but he's still up there.  Have to admit it was a lot of fun being outsmarted by that old boy! He gobbles back and struts in about 3 different places, but somehow manages to never be in the same place 2 times in a row.  Seasons not over and I'm not done with him, but not sure I'll have to heart to blast him when and if he finally does come in range. I'd just feel really good if I could actually look him in the eye and think I finally outsmarted you!  Puts a different perspective on your hunt when you decide to just hunt one bird and only that bird.  I'll eat tag soup before I take another and might punch my tag when I get close enough and decide to not shoot him.  I'd estimate his beard at 13" to 14".

Sounds like an awesome bird, not sure I could hold off on a mature gobbler in range though lol. Westside bird?

Stevens county bird.  Lots around this year, relatives staying with me shot 8 the opening weekend and gave me guff for holding off. Won't be a problem getting one if I change my mind, but don't think I will.
