Weyerhaeuser Tree Farm Trapping

I see this year that Weyerhaeuser is not allowing trapping on at least the Vail or St. Helens areas.  I believe that in the past that you could.  I sent them an email telling them how unhappy I was about this.  If you are unhappy about this please send an email to Weyerhaesuer and let them know.  Here is a link to all of the different areas emails.  https://www.wyrecreationnw.com/ContactUs.aspx

Maybe the WSTA should contact Weyerhaeuser and find out why they are not allowing trapping.

Wow!  That sucks big time. I don't know much about that area but is it a leased or gate entry fee zone? Is this a way for Weyerhauser to make more money in the future with trapping specific leases?  I don't really like the path that our access and rules regarding the outdoors is headed down. Seems every year a few more things are taken away or restricted.

I am not sure about St. Helens but Weyerhaeuser has a trapper that is contracted for Vail. His name is Billy. His son does the bear control in Vail also.

Here is the reply I got back from Weyerhaeuser:

"Beginning April 2016, Weyerhaeuser has committed up to 3 million acres of private timberland in Washington and Oregon to support a variety of conservation efforts focused on reintroducing the North American Fisher (Fisher) throughout the West.  For this reason, no trapping is currently allowed.

Makes NO sense, you can only use cage traps, so all fisher could be released.

Just about every one in this state I've talked to has no clue we can only use cage traps.

What is it that makes you unhappy, the fact that you can't do something you didn't do before, or the fact that you now know you can't do something that you never actually did?

Do you have any actual information or are you just trying to stir the pot?
Trappers have been trapping on WEYCO lands since before they were WEYCO with WEYCOs blessings.

What about beaver?   Seems with culverts plugging up that anyone willing or able to trap beaver would be welcome.  They sure would be on my timberland.

Macs B can you explain how you think this is a legit reason?  Since they are already required to use cage traps, continued trapping would have ZERO impact on any returning Fisher.

Discussing it, voicing an opinion or making folks aware of a policy change is not being butt hurt.  + There are a hell of a lot more activities going on that will have a greater impact on fisher when compared to cage trapping.

No it isn't, because you can only use live traps, if a Fisher should happen to get in a trap all that needs to be done is open the trap and let it go, no harm done.
