WDFW INVESTIGATING POSSIBLE WOLF POACHING IN NE WA
APRIL 21, 2016 ANDY WALGAMOTT   LEAVE A COMMENT
Washington wildlife managers say an investigation is under way into the possible poaching of a wolf in Northeast Washington.

Donny Martorello reports that a WDFW collar put on a member of the Diamond Pack was recovered in Pend Oreille County in the last month.

RANGE OF THE DIAMOND PACK NORTH OF SPOKANE AS OF 2014. IT HAS SINCE MOVED ITS DEN INTO IDAHO BUT STILL ROAMS IN WASHINGTON. (WDFW)
RANGE OF THE DIAMOND PACK NORTH OF SPOKANE AS OF 2014. IT HAS SINCE MOVED ITS DEN INTO IDAHO BUT STILL ROAMS IN WASHINGTON. (WDFW)

No carcass was found, and Martorello acknowledges that collars can slip off, be chewed off by packmates and break off, but they can also be cut off and bolts can be loosened.

He says that WDFW officers are investigating.

The Diamond Pack was formerly Washington’s largest, but has moved its den across the state line into Idaho, though it still roams in east-central Pend Oreille County.

Im sure that they will have no troubles getting info on this one.  :chuckle:

Lol.  They say the diamond pack isnt a wa pack anymore so its not counting toward our "recovery goal," but as soon as one turns up possibly dead its a wa wolf again.  Funny.  Just a concerned idaho resident returning the collar to wa after a legal harvest in idaho obviously

Why are they investigating "possible wolf poaching" as apposed to "possible collar accidentally falling off"?

If the collar didnt slip off, if it was killed, the shooter missed a good opportunity.  Wdfw headquarters needs to start getting bloody collars in the mail.  Anybody who thinks we will get a wolf season in this state is high.  Very very high.

It would be funny to see one of those collars attached to the underside of a semi that's heading cross country, or better yet to a container heading over seas. :chuckle:

My thoughts exactly.  Since it is known to den in ID, can it also not be a legal ID harvest?  Someone at WDFW needs a little PR lesson.

It slipped off. Hopefully, a great many more will be slipping off in the near future.

I would imagine if WDFW were to report on all the collars that have "slipped", they would also have to admit where the wolves are that they refuse to confirm which isn't going to happen.

Picking a confirmed pack to investigate and adding the poaching line just adds fuel for the lawyers, AKA environmental groups and of course gives them another excuse to beg for more money over the poor wolves.

Their agenda on predator management really seems to be for the entire state to go to special permit only.  If you think WDFW really thinks that they are correctly managing predator impacts then you must think they are really really stupid.  IMO it may be a little more sinister than simply stupid.

For those of you that have not read WDFW's wolf proposal, it's written in there in black and white "hunting seasons may necessarily have to be adjusted" when talking about sustaining the wolf population.

I have several friends who were trapping wolves all winter in Idaho.  The amount of kills they found was truly astonishing even for guys that know how horrible wolves are.  Mostly moose and Mule Deer.  Lots of mule deer!

Let's hear numbers. I ran into a guy who cross country skied on the border of unit 10 and found 18 dead cow/calf elk over an 8 mile stretch following wolf tracks. They no longer allow people down into the winter range during winter months on the North Fork of the Clearwater. I believe it's so people don't see what's going on.

Sounds like an undercover you tube video is needed!

Last I checked the WDFW works for us.   Did we tell them they could investigate this possible wolf poaching?  WDFW should be fired for insubordination.  Lynch Mob?    :twocents:
