homemade jigs
« on: April 25, 2016, 06:10:28 PM »
no more buying this crap, making my own and they do better :)  Got a deal on copper pipe, had lots of lead to fill em and got some good deals on the Sportco tent sale.  I got a about 2 bucks in each jig but they would sell for lots more.  Just got back from Neah ling opener and kicked ass but man do I hate losing a 50Cent piece of lead in the kelp!!!! Now the LINGS are going to pay hell with these jigs!!!!

Those look great man!  One thing about the treble hooks I noticed on the opener, they were very sticky on the bottom! Most stuff we lost had the triple hooks on the end of the jig, but that's what happens when bottom fishing!  Go get em!
“In common with”..... not so much!!

Look good. We have been building our own for quite a while. My .02, move the bottom treble up so it hangs about a half inch above the bottom of the jig. You can get then bounce bottom with the jig body and not snag so often. I did away with the top hook. If you are going deep they tend to catch you line when dropping down. I also put a swivel on the split ring. We use the for halibut and when they roll, they will open the split ring if there is one swivel. We catch a ton of fish with these.

ya played with the hook spots on the jigs. My father in law chartered for Cod Father in Port Hardy for 20 yrs and shared tips, he likes the treble up top but my buddys often let the jig drop down and sit on the bottom for a second so the spot doesn't matter if the jig actually lays on the bottom for a second. If you are good, and have the right tide and wind and can just tap the bottom with the bottom of the jig you wont get hung up. BUT that's not reality so I make a ton of jigs and let my CREW learn LOL.  I do make them fight the hangs ups, I will back the boat up but no tieing off to the cleat.
