Spring black bear near anchorage advice
« on: March 22, 2016, 07:27:27 AM »
I will be in Anchorage for a class April 18-29 and am looking to do a spring bear hunt in the area.  I am looking for anyone familiar to the area or who could recommend someone for a drop camp.
Thanks,
Joe

Prince William sound has bears all over if you can find a boat you can drive to Whittier which is 45-60 minutes away from Anchorage. You can also hunt around Hope and hike up in the wilderness or glass the hills on the side of highway going toward seward

I don't think you need a drop camp just for black bear. The Chugach State Park has a ton of black bears right behind Anchorage and would be as good a spot as any to go to. Take any of the trails up from the Seward highway and you will be in decent bear country. I've seen lots of black bears up most every trail including Bird Ridge, Indian, Crow Creek, Eagle River and many above Eklutna Lake. Eklutna is an archery only area but pretty much everywhere else around there is open to rifle.

:yeah: look on Alaska Fish and Game website you can do a registration hunt I believe for non-residents. I did it as a resident and went hunting in the area he is describing Eagle River (used to live there). Good amount of bears, they will be up high for the most part depending on the area and snow level that year. You don't need a drop camp just drive out there and hike in. Here was a picture from a hunt of mine, we went to early and not many bears where out yet...
