Many moons ago in FT Polk Louisiana we bought gator tags. You could set hooks and "fish" them or lay out an shoot one. I tried shooting one first, not productive, too many skeeters and snakes, and pretty much impossible to actually ambush a gator. The next weekend we took turkey necks wired to big stainless hooks and hung them from overhanging saplings with 550 cord. That worked real well, but was completely non selective. We caught a couple of smallish (5 footers) and one about eight feet. A lot of fun, and definitely something to get your blood up when you pull on that line from a little john boat. Some outfitters are familiar enough with the water to hook big gators. Others go out at night and shoot them with spot lights. I think I'd go night shooting for one next time.
