Any interest in a Selfbow Forum?
« on: January 31, 2009, 09:08:13 AM »
Just curious if anyone is interested in a selfbow forum.  I'm a well read newbie and though there are a lot of good sites out there for this information, I'd personally like to have this site be my one-stop-shop for all things hunting.

I'm about to embark on my first self bow build this season. I obtained some maple for my bow and am not against a self bow forum. At this time there does not seem to be much discussion on the subject to warrant it's own board just yet. Maybe I am wrong though... I know that we have several folks who have built their own bows here and even two professional bowyers who visit regularly..

Yeah, I thought Jay might have some thoughts.  I made my first bow (laminated takedown recurve) in 1994 and have wanted to make a Yew selfbow for years.  I've made a few kids bows and am getting ready to square up some yew billets soon.  I've not tillered a yew bow yet and am eager yet still nervous.  At some point you have to quit reading and start making shavings.

Taking a class on making my own bow is on my list of things I want to do in the future.

I'd just start a good thread in the archery section.

I'm definitely interested
maybe Ray could pin a thread on making them, include trials and tribulations, advice....how a person gets started etc  ;)

I don't have any trials tribulations advice or accounts. Never made my own bow.  :chuckle: So if I have any advice is - don't listen to me.

Look I don't think it's necessary yet. Once we get some actual self bow build along topics then we can consider it. Until then it doesn't make any sense. There is not much traffic in the archery forum to begin with so I think it's premature to make a spot for making self bows since nobody has posted anything but pictures of bows they have made.

I know Jay does classes in his barn out in Fall City for build alongs and would be glad to show some folks. I don't think he intends to do write ups on it because he spends so much time making bows I would imagine he doesn't have time to put it all down on the internet. However I can't speak for him...

I agree with Ray and would like to add that if we have some really good tutorials we could save them to the articles section.

Ray I was hinting that you ought to keep an online journal of your build ;)

And I think pinning or adding to articles is probably easiest/best for now.

I have a buddy gluing me up a piece of Ipe backed with Bamboo... Not a selfbow...but about as close as I will get (I have actually built about 10 lil kids self bows... but they are easy)... When I get it.. I'll try and take some pics and such and put up the build along.. . :hello:

As the weather (and my rustic shop) warms up and the days get longer, I'll look forward to throwing a hand in for an online bow build.

And I'd really look forward to viewing and hearing about everyone's various bow crafting projects going on out there, so please, post away!
It's a great life if you don't weaken
