I'm trying to decide between the Casio mudman or pathfinder. I haven't worn a watch in years but it's getting a little old turning on and checking my rino for basic information all the time in the woods.  Looking for digital with a good backlight, waterproof, compass and thermometer. I have it down to those two because they seem to be the "smaller" size abc watches but I'm open to ideas.


Oh and I believe both of those are solar powered which would be handy long term.

Mossy, Why not get an Activity Monitor watch?  There are a number of really good ones on the market with GPS, heart rate monitor, steps, time, weather, etc.  ??

I don't think they are very well protected I guess. Looking for something pretty durable for work and in the woods.

I have a G shock and it is sweet. I'm not sure if they have the compass and stuff but I think Casio makes G shock so I'm a fan. I'll take a look at the mudman and pathfinder

Get the Pathfinder Tough Solar.  I have worn the same one for all of my outdoor activities for years.  Can't believe it is still going after 10 to  12 years.  You will never need to crack it open/ break the good factory seal to replace the battery.  I bought a second one couple of years ago as a back-up that only gets worn during archery hunts, but the original is still doing fine and has seen some hard use over the years.

I have the Casio Pro trek and love it! and it is tough as nails  has the compass an alttitude and temp on it

I have the Casio g shock ranger.   It is nice.   Though,  I wish I would have bought the Garmin tactix for the gps.

Honestly solar in a watch is pretty much a gimmick.
I have a few watches ranging from a Jarger-LeCoultre Master Ultru Thin to my daily wear a Timex Ironman Triathelon.
On a modern digital watch it is not uncommon to have a battery last 5-8 years of daily wear.
I would make a list of the features you want, then go look at the faces. Some are harder to read then others, and some are horrible with the light on. I prefer the Indiglo style of lighting. It is allot easier for my eyes to see in the dark.
The I would also replace the band. Most bands that come on watches totally suck, there are exceptions though. I am very hard on bands, so I prefer a rubber for a daily band, I have yet to break one.

Good advice with lighting since that is a big importance for me. I haven't worn a watch for probably 10 years due to them just not lasting. Generally it was the battery but sometimes they just quit. I got tired of spending $100 a year for a new watch so I quit.

I don't have any experience with either of those two but I can tell you I found a casio in my fathers house after he passed away in 2003. I ran across his old watch in my drawer a couple years back and it was still running  I was pissed cause I have been through 3 timex compass watches since then   

As far as the two you are considering the Pathfinder looks cool ... I compared  the Garmin and Suunto last year, went with the Suunto ambit with heart monitor mostly because the face is large and easy to read plus I got tired of replacing cheap watches.
