Those are pathetic prices for furs. You have to be dedicated to the sport to be trapping these days.

You might want to explain that you sold those civets to taxidermists. In some cases taxidermy may be the best market for trappers. There's a lot of competition for selling common furbearers to taxidermists, but you can also make money selling unclassified wildlife like civets, porcupines, mountain beaver, marmots, and even sage rats. "How to sell to the taxidermy market" might be a good article for The Fur Shed.

I'm really surprised you got that much for the coons. Mine finally sold at the last auction and the five coon totaled $6.25.  :bash: . I believe they were all blue though if I remember right.

I'm curious about the blue raccoon, what makes the skin blue and is it rare, therefore increasing the price?  Are there other species that are blue?

A Blue Raccoon is an early caught unprimed coon. They are called blue because the skin side of the fur is a slate blue  to black in color. Low grade, not worth much.

I sold an otter that I had completely forgot about for $35. I guess I was pretty fortunate since the average was a little over $17 with 95% sold. Someone is going to make some money on those otter after they're manufactured into something.

Here's my receipt for the auction. Went down to the store and splurged and spent the whole thing on a bag of chips!  :chuckle:

At that price, you best just be handing them the whole animal and letting them skin and tan the hides.

I believe those coons have been at NAFA since December of 2014. I never sent them anything this year. Unless the market really changes in the next few seasons, I don't plan to send anything in any time soon. I'm looking at tanning everything and then have cool things made for my daughters and wife. Probably some vests, coats or even a purse. Plus I want a Russian style trapper hat made from a beaver or otter.
