Got the CVA today!!!
« on: May 09, 2016, 07:06:12 PM »
Well. I pulled the trigger last week and ordered a CVA Accura V2 Northwest with the Nitride barrel.  Got it today and I am excited to get out and shoot it.  I also picked up some triple 7 powder (ff) and 1081 musket caps.

This is my first muzzy, can anyone recommend a good bullet for deer with this combination?  I have researched all the different types and not sure which way to go (sabot vs belted vs ?).  Thanks for all your help!

Check out "No Excuses"  bullets,  LOVE mine and they shoot great!  460 grain is perfect for deer.

If you're only hunting deer, I would try Hornady XTP handgun bullets. They shoot great in my CVA, and they're cheap. Low recoil too, with your choices being from 240 grain to 300 grain bullets.

Thanks guys!  I appreciate the info.  I will check them both out.

I was looking at the power belts and they get great reviews also.  Although the costs looks pretty high.

Interesting to me that a 300+ grain bullet is good for deer, I shoot a 135 gr out if my rifle.  Although everything i read online is suggesting 250gr +.

I suppose its hard to get too much smaller in a 50 cal.  (Newbie is coming out here :-) )

Yeah, 250 grains is a really light bullet for a muzzleloader. I used to shoot 435 grain bullets out of my .54.

I would definitely go with the XTP's over Powerbelts. A better bullet and much cheaper, what's not to like.

My accurate v2 loves hornady 250g sst's, over 110g 3f. The 300 sst's were just as accurate.
The xtps I used were pretty good, with a better savoy I think I would use em more.
Powerboats were accurate, buy to many reports of failed projectiles for me to bother with em.

For me the sst's are easy to get, pretty flat shooting, and accurate.

I started off with Powerbelts, switched to XTPs and now I much prefer the No Excuse bullets.

Congrats on the new muzzleloader I just picked up my new optima yesterday.  I have decided to go with the 325 ftx hornady and a mmp orange sabot that should match it.  I have shot deer with the 325 ftx in a 45/70 And the damage is rediculous.  My thoughts are if I can match the fps of that load in the ML and take shots under 150 yds results should be good.

Better get a GOOD solid ramrod and handle in order to load those .458's! I shot some .458s through a couple of my cvas and a traditions. Way to tight. If I hadnt had a solid SS range rod with a thick handle, theres zero chance i could have loaded them.

Huh,  that thought crossed my mind but was quickly dismissed.  We will see maybe I will end up shooting the 300 gr sst if the ftx is too much of a pain.

:yeah: I'll second the 250 SST's.  They shoot great, load easy, and kill deer.
