Toyota Tundra 4.6L ?
« on: May 10, 2016, 12:20:15 AM »
2013 Toyota Tundra Crewmax 4.6L V-8 4x4?
Anyone have any real world experience with this Model Truck and engine? Would be used as daily driver, occasional towing of 18ft boat and occasional elk and deer camp trailer.

I've got a 2012 4.6L Crewmax and I really like it.  I think for your stated uses the 4.6L will suit you just fine.  The Crewmax cab is ridiculously big, people won't mind sitting in the back seat that's for sure!  Mileage isn't great, I get 15-16mpg after upgrading to E rated 275 BFG A/T's.

In regards to towing you'll have plenty of power to tow your boat.  I tow a 20ft Trophy and it handles that great, although it's just up and down the I-5 corridor.  I've been working a few projects at my house and have really tested the towing and hauling capacities recently.  1,000 lbs in the bed is no problem, I've pushed that to 1,300 lbs and it still felt very comfortable, although the rear end squat at 1,300 lbs was a bit much!  I've hauled dump trailers that I know I surpassed max tow rating with.... Not very fun from a suspension standpoint but they were acceptable to tow the short distance I went.

Overall I've been very impressed with the 4.6L engine, it's got some get up and go as well.  I don't regret not getting the 5.7L for my needs, but I do wonder if the 4.6L handles this well what the 5.7L would be like!  :chuckle:  Reliability wise mine had to be fixed for a cam tower leak (big repair $$ if not under warranty) and they found the water pump was leaking a little when they did the cam tower repair.  That was at about 15,000 miles - I'm at 84,000 now and it's been all good since.  The cam tower leak is one that I've read quite a few other Tundra owners have dealt with as well.

How much does a timing belt cost on a 4.6 and is it an interference engine?

You will be just fine with that motor.  Its been on the road longer than the 5.7 and is a great engine.  My buddy picked one up because it was too good of a deal to pass up.  He was torn about not getting a 5.7 but has loved that truck ever since.  It will do everything you want and you wont even notice the difference except for the fancy badge that is missing.

Oh. One of them is a belt motor, no? I worked at a Toyota dealer for about a month 7-8 years ago and remember one of their v8's being a really expensive timing belt replacement.

The 4.7 v-8 is the guilty party on that.

My 2011 double cab 4.6 runs real nice.  Crewmax has more room in back than mine

Crewmax only has 5.5 foot bed (double cab has 6.5 foot)

4.6 and 5.7 are both timing chain, double overhead cam engines

Mine is about 15 mpg

It is big, I park in straight through stalls.  I have the BU camera.

No, you'll be part of a frame or bed rust recall wondering 'Who still believes Toyota makes superior vehicles?'.
