Mt. Adams Wilderness

After hunting the Winston unit for the last 6 years and having luck it has been on quite the decline and I have no interest in paying Weyerhaeuser $300. So my buddy and I are headed to Mt. Adams wilderness area. I hunted there in 2008 and missed a a cow. I was just curious what the elk numbers are like down there since its been a while for me. We will be doing archery.

Numbers are depressed. Elk still there but plan on putting miles and lots of effort to find elk. Awesome country. More guys hunt it than you might think.

Certainly gets a lot of pressure in places. It is a small Wilderness area. In most areas it is only about 5 miles from the roads to timberline. Also remember that the east side is on the Yakama Indian Reservation.

Keep in mind with the 23 road from Randel being closed for the ente year It will take you 7-8 hours from Bellingham to get up there. If I was in your shoes if be looking at Idaho for archery that's where I'll be

Big fire in the wilderness last year.  Depending on how hot it burned it could be some good feed this year.

23 is going to be closed atleast 2-3 years, federal highways are involved now.

It wasn't just on the Rez, it made it past the Gotchen Creek cabin.

    rumor is the federal highway commision is taking it over, which is good because they will move to get repairs done faster than the forest service.

That's not necessarily the case. I know the USFS has brought in the federal highway commission on a lot of their roads that washed out for the purpose of getting their advice on how to fix the problem. They are more experienced and deal with these issues a lot.
