Backcountry Trail Cam Recommendations?
« on: May 08, 2016, 10:53:13 AM »
I am looking to place some cameras far from a road in June and check them again in mid-September, so weight and long battery life are important.  It seems like there are about 50,000 trail cameras on the market so I'm hoping someone can help me narrow this down.

Ive liked this camera so far. I haven't tried it with the battery pack yet. But should last you plenty of time in the woods.

I've got a bushnell HD. Amazing pics and the battery life is impressive on just the photo setting. Videos eats up the batteries pretty quick ( like 8 months of videos before I had to replace them)

Bobcat is the man when it comes to this stuff

Quantity > quality imho. I'd never spend >$100/cam. I'm pretty happy with two basic browning cams I picked up in 2014. My promos is good but to heavy for back country. The image quality on the browning isn't the best but they're fairly compact. Use rechargeable batteries, a solar panel,  or a battery pack for extended life. Don't waste money on a high capacity SD card just because it had a fast read/write speed. Again quantity > quality.

I have a couple cams, my covert 60hd has a great battery life, so does my primos 46 but some people don't like the primos 46.  I've had no problems.  I would also not feel comfy about them not getting stolen or messed with just because they are far out, I've had one stolen and two messed with in the backcountry. D bags are everywhere. B

I used to use run Primos cams but about 50% stopped working after a year and they drain their batteries really quickly. I now use Moultrie 880I Gen II and I have half a dozen. I have yet to have one die on me after one season. I really like that they have a screen on them so you can scroll through pictures in the field without having to swap a card into a camera or plug in a hand held device. I also like that once you have the camera set up you can switch the cam to a setting that displays the view the cam is seeing on the screen so you can make sure the cam is set correctly (elevation, branches in view, etc.) They are relatively small which I like too. You can often find them on sale on camofire or several other places for great deals if you keep an eye out. Good luck in choosing the cam for you. Hope you share all the cool pictures you capture!

Ive had pretty good luck with trail cams so far. I have 2 moultri 880's, a bushnell, a primos and a wild game innovations and they have all worked well for me. Of them it seems like the Moultries had the best battery life but i really have no complaints about the others.

i have a stealth-cam and really like it. The battery life has been great (6+ months) if you spend a extra for top shelf batteries. Make sure you get a bear box, cable and lock. If someone really wants it they'll get it, just don't make it easy for them.
