Lures in selective gear rivers ?
« on: May 23, 2016, 09:10:10 AM »
What type of lures are people using in selective gear rivers ? I need to pick up a few. Salmon, steelhead & trout. I do not fly fish. Roostertails with the hooks switched ?

what I use if selective gear called out.. make sure its not fly fishing only waters. Panther martins either cut off 2/3 hook and peen barb or new hook replaced (preferred). I like to leave skirt on if above hook too..

Rooster tails are about as good as you get for trout. Their larger versions may catch a salmon/steelhead or two
Tule, the other white meat.

Blue Fox with a single hook or bust. Match the water clarity as well.

My biggest fish (non-salmon) on a WA River is this 19" with a Blue Fox, white, with feathers, before they were forced to stop selling them that way.

Small spoons like a little Cleo or kastmaster should be in you arsenal as well. Typically these will have a split ring on the back and be easier to change the hooks on. Also you should have a selection of small Rapala countdowns rigged with a single barbless hooks. Lastly I would suggest some jighead's with curlytail grubs. These can be effective as well. I don't fish selective waters very much anymore but these setups were always with me when I did.

Where are you fishing and for what?  I don't think one size fits all advice will serve you well here.  In general, spinners like Blue Fox are a good bet for salmon.  Roostertails are my go-to for stream and river trout.

I like rooster tails, cut off the treble and put on a single barbless hook.

Drifting a Dick Nite on a 3' leader can be deadly, as well; just remember to pinch the barb.

My #1 method for salmon and steelhead is spoons. Look up R&B lures or RVRFSHR and get some 2/5oz spoons in silver and copper finishes. Fish the silver in colored water and the copper when it's clear.
