Staining antlers....
« on: September 30, 2007, 07:03:55 PM »
as promised 6 months ago Michelle.

I finally figured out what stain I used.  I used a paint brush..and brushed on one thin coat of min wax aged oak (Gel form). Then, once the coat was on, I used an old shirt and scrubbed mud all over the shed.  The mud is really wet. Then I went over to the hose and hosed it off. I then dried the shed and put on one more coat of min wax, mud then rinsed. I will use some steel wool on the end of the main beam.  The mud really helped fill in any cracks and helped take away the smell too.  It is very important to use the gel form of the stain.  I couldn't find it at Lowes, but home depot had it.  I left the mud on for about 10 minutes until it was drying and caking on.

I hate stained antlers.  I took a set that we didn't find fresh and used it on them.  The results were incredible.  After a day or two when the scent went away, you would absolutely be hard pressed to know these were stained.  IMO I think the only way to top it would be to go out and rub some trees yourself.
Another guy intorduced me to this, and I am very impressed.  In another 6 months, I'll get you the pics.

I just started attempting to stain sheds as well. Some people have success with shoe polish. I found that if it was just starting to turn white the shoe polish worked well. The stain works well after they are really white. Here are a few that I did this year. I hope to get better with practice. I need to rub them on a tree and in the dirt a little bit.

Cool.  I am going to try this method on the next set I hae to stain.   :chuckle: Ooooo, now I am going to rub mud all over those Mule Deer sheds I found.  Don't think I am going to rinse it off.  Wait til it dries good and than rub most of it offand see what it does.  Deer antlers arn't clean, not like I am going to eat off these, lol.

It really works!  It helps remove the shine from the stain, fills cracks, and makes it very authentic looking.
