GMU 133 Bear Hunting Knowledge
« on: May 27, 2016, 05:43:53 PM »
Does anyone have experience hunting bear in GMU 133? I hunted 108 last fall and got a bear but am pretty busy early September and want to hunt earlier this year. (133 opener is Aug. 1st)

I'm just wondering if there are steady populations in that area with ample opportunity or if I'll be wasting my time.

If not 133 I'll need to hunt somewhere with a Aug 15 opener like GMU 124. Sucks to be limited like this but it is what it is.

Any info is welcomed.
Thanks

Here's last years blackie that is "generously" positioned in my avatar.  :chuckle:

That's a nice looking bear

Dan, I have seen 4 bear up in 133, and have seen 3 bear that were killed up in that unit. I've hunted in 133 for 20 years. There is a decent bear population in 133 and a few moose as well. It's mostly a deer, turkey, coyote unit from my experience. However there are bear. Chances are as good as 124 that's for sure.

That's great info. Thank you gomez. Sounds like it can be doable but obviously no guarantee. Not trying to steal your hunting spots but if there is any direction you can point me in I would be very appreciative. I'm thinking about paying a person who has property with bears that frequent it. A good option if there are actually some bears on it. But it's a bit of a hefty fee for me.

Sounds like I shouldn't cross out 133 for bear though. Thanks

There are bears in 133, but it is predominately private land for the bulk of the unit. Looking at the guide service is not a bad idea for this unit unless you have permission from land owners or contacts with the owners. Good luck! :twocents:

Yea I guess it comes down to the money for the guide service because that's the only way I'll try and hunt 133 at this point. Seems like it could be a good deal. I just didnt know if the guy was pulling my leg and there is only 1 bear in the entire unit. Sounds like this is not the case. I'll definitely hunt on the property if I have a decent chance. I know it's hunting. Just don't wanna spend the money for nothing.

Does anybody know the owners at YJ Guide Service? They seem like nice people that know hunting.
