Ruger gunsite scout rifle

What's your feelings about this rifle? What role is it meant to fill. Useful?

  Love the sights, 6 something lbs. Short barrel.

Don't like that it acts more like a push feed due to magazine lips. I also feel that if your making it a 10 shot, why not shoot for 15 at least?

I like them but not too fond of the magazine protruding out the bottom at the balance point

They really goofed when they didn't make it to accept M14 mags.  I wasn't really impressed when I shot it, I have never cared for Ruger rifles though.

i'm not a big fan of forward mounted scopes.  if i had one, i'd take off that rail and put a standard scope mount on, or just use the iron sights.

Mine was my favorite rifle (was because it got stollen a few weeks back). Great truck/ranch gun! Mine had a rough life, out moving cows once it was getting in the way and got tossed off of a quad, it was bounced around the bed of a truck with fencing supplies, etc.


I'm not a very good shot but mine could shoot! It'd be great if I could stop throwing the third shot every time I shoot for groups (yes, every flyer is shot #3, thats on me not the gun).
Here's how I sighted it in and tested my reloads:

The 3 round magazines basically sit flush if the protruding magazines bother you. The balance point is just where I think it should be, with your hand in front of the magazine it carries barrel down. MagPull now sells magazines that will fit so they are about the cheapest option for those that cry about price of magazines. Price never bothered me on those, AICS pattern magazines were a great way to go, I never lost a mag in the military and I definitely never dropped one when hunting.

I'll be replacing mine soon, I really like the iron sights that it comes with so instead of a traditional mounted Leupold 2-7 I'll be going with the Leupy 1.5-5 scout scope. That one in particular mounts further to the rear than most "scout" scopes so it is closer to a traditional mounted scope in use but allows keeping the rear sight mounted to the gun.

Ok just read up on them and I'm thinking in 5.56 that maybe the perfect coyote rifle. Pretty damned handy in .308 as well.

I was giving it a look as an alternative to the AR, AK platforms. I would be using irons, no question.


Every AR I've looked at and handled and shot, every single one just seems to miss the mark. I just don't dig all the extra add on junk. .

I like the gunsite, really,  but the ten red mag is a bummer. Did read that ruger made a switch to polymer mags that are trimmer and lighter.

I dont know what they come with now days but mine came with a steel 10 round magazine, Ruger also sells a 5 round steel magazine, a 3, 5 and 10 round polymer magazine and the MagPul mags fit the Rugers also but their "5" rounder is a bit longer than the Ruger 5 round magazine and can be easily modified to hold 6 rounds. The poly mags are shorter and thinner than the steel mags, there are also other aftermarket companies that offer magazines that fit the GSR.

Mine WAS a bit gritty when I first got it but some dry fire practice had it smoother than other new bolt rifles I have. And the triggers are easy to lighten up yourself (not sure why everyone says Rugers are hard to work on, I think they are easy) but if you dont trust yourself skip the timney and get a Spec Tec trigger.

I think the sights are fantastic. At first I wished for more easily adjustable sights like on an AR or my M14 but after use I'm a fan of the semi-perminant setting of the Rugers. It's a very robust system.

You can get either one. Ruger is also selling the composite stocks separately if someone wants to retrofit their laminate stock GSR.

I have had mine for I think 2 years now it's in .308 and it is one of my favorite rifles. Shots great an just a fun gun.

I have a lefty in 308. Very handy. Accuracy on par with above pictured groups. Run it suppressed for the most part. Makes a great truck, bike, ATV rifle.

9 month bump,
I picked one up in stainless a couple weeks ago. Mine came with 2 10round polymer magazines, and I purchased a separate 5 round. I Broke the barrel in and sighted in the iron sights last weekend.   This weekend I slapped on a Burris 2-7x32 scout scope with Leopold QRW low rings.    I Loaded up some 165gr Gamekings in front of a healthy dose of Varget and Headed for the hills.

I had a few concerns before I bought this rifle.  Or any rifle with that short of a barrel.

Poor accuracy, I expected 2"+ groups  (I was pleasantly surprised ).   

It will blow out my eardrums.  (I took 2 shot without hearing protection and It's not any louder than my .357 mag)

It will be a Flame throwing monster.  ( I don't notice any muzzle flash with or without the flash suppressor installed.)

The Scout scope.    I was kind of weirded out by scout scopes and the Ruger comes with rings for standard scope mounting over the receiver.  But.... I really wanted something "different" and decided to give it a try.     (So far so good,  accuracy is good, target aqusition seems faster and peripheral vision is better when looking through the scout scope than a standard   Also the scope doesn't beat on my side arm when slung over my shoulder.

 
QRW rings.  I like the idea of a removable scope but was concerned with repeatability.  (I removed the scope and replaced it between 2 of the 3 shot groups pictured above, with little or no change to point of impact)
