NAFA sale 2016
« on: May 28, 2016, 01:59:22 PM »
Any predictions for the sale starting tomorrow? I have rats and mink up for bid. Beaver on Tuesday. I predict:
Rats- $2.50
Mink- $8.00
Beaver- $9.00

Kept all my other furs. Couldn't handle giving them away.

We cut way back on the rats and mink. In the auction we have 119 rats, 3 mink, and 22 beavers. Kept all our cats, otters, skunks, and 5 big mink. The grading seemed pretty harsh this year. My son did his best job ever with the rats by far and I don't think it showed.

I think you are a little high,
$2 rats
$8 beaver
$4 mink
I hope I am wrong!

I read where FHA offered 20,000 top end coyotes and they basically flopped.
Coyote was the one thing was supposed to be demand for.

Can't decide if I want to get up early enough to watch it or not. It says the sale starts at 7:30 so I'm thinking that's eastern time. Awful early to start the day with depressing news.

On the NAFA site. My wife and son like to watch and listen. I just like to see the lots sell as they are won. Both are entertaining when prices are good.

Had to check. My sons top rats went for $3.60. Going down fast! Ugh. Watching the otters go now. Pretty ugly. I'm glad I kept all mine.

George Brady said there was zero interest in otters at the Helsinki sale. Apparently nobody even bothered  to inspect them.
Hard to understand for me because IMO they are about the nicest fur there is.
Mine are all getting tanned.

Why do you think they weren't even checking them out?

Well you hit the rats right for us. $2 average. However we did get a $7 avg for mink and $10 for beaver. Only 1 beaver didn't sell and it was the best grade fur of them all. Can't figure that.  :dunno:

$64 question. Guessing but probably nobody using them. If it wasn't for Canada Goose coyotes would be in the toilet too. Somebody comes up with a product people want with otter they will take off. Until then?

Well, I wish I was a little more wrong to the good side. I've had a number of BB in the last few years that were my best. I always figured NAFA was going for more then the bidders were willing. Maybe they will private treaty them. I'm never been happy with the result but to be fair I probably would have been unhappy if they had let them go at the auction.

I've been studying the results all afternoon. I had an interest in the coyotes mainly and I was very disappointed. Western semi-heavies only sold 60% at $26.78 averages. That's down $10 ($36.34) from January and down $28 ($54.33) from January, 2015. I thought coyotes were going to hold strong as well.

Silly me for trying to predict the fur market!

There is an interesting thread over on the Lynx lair about coyotes.
Apparently Canada Goose wants only the very best of the best. It sounds like they rejected a bunch of the ones bought by their suppliers and they were sent back to the auction.
from what they said Canada Goose is buying the trim strips from suppliers, not the entire coyote and last year they were not happy with some of the product they were getting so they are inspecting pre-cutting now and are a lot more selective.
It sounds like buyers were paying good money for what they thought were good but many didn't make the grade.
Bottom line, there is a good market for select coyotes and not much demand  for the rest. I really don't think we have the kind of coyotes Canada Goose wants in WA.

Washington coyotes certainly are not the best. I know north of Wenatchee you can get into some western heavies. Here in the basin we get plenty of pales but I am lucky to get a semi-heavy grade. It's too bad because we sure have a pile of them around here!
