Copalis bear update
« on: May 29, 2016, 07:35:21 PM »
Interesting weekend, camped at the quary, Saturday night. Hunted most of the day Saturday and Sunday morning.  Skies opened up all day Saturday, just dumped on us, rain high winds made hunting miserable so we called it a night a little early.  Got up today and did a little hiking, saw deer and a few cows.  The fawn and distress calls i got from Rick had a surprising effect on two does and a pig of a cow.  All three came to the call as if they were expecting a hurt fawn, one doe stood from me no more then 10 yds with a dazed look and didnt want to leave my sight, after 5 min she slowly walked away but kept looking at me.  On a different spot we spotted a brute bear, this guy was huge, we estimated him at close to 300 lbs but he was over 1000 yds, i had a bead on him but no way was i taking that shot.  So TomT and i started after him calling in intervals as we tried to close the distance, as we walked toward the brute who was walking away from us a huge cow came out onto the road between us and the bear but she was looking at the bear and us alternating.  We approached where she was at but had worked her way into the woods and as i called she came to us expecting a fawn, when she realized we werent what she expected she barked off at us and started stomping and barking more, she got pissed at us and stormed back and forth about 20 to 30 yds, away from us,  we could feel the ground shake she was so heavy.  She eventually left but she made sure that we knew that she was not happy with us.  We searched and called the brute bear but he wasnt to be found.  On our way back to my truck another smaller cow appeared on the road curious to know where the hurt fawn was, she too eventually worked her way into the woods.  Very exciting weekend, ill be back the next two weekends to search for brutus.  Think ill concentrate on that same area the whole time, there are signs bears are in there.  Good times.
