Bird dog Mentorship Seattle area

Anyone in Seattle area an experienced bird dog owner? I just welcomed a Brittany to the family and am looking for some guidance. Happy to pay for your time. I am a relatively new hunter as well.  Looks like we will both learn together.

Max is a fantastic pup. Just picked him up from Wally Hartwell. Great breeder.  Great guy.

Congrats, he is good looking boy.  There will be lots of suggestions but I would suggest reading some training books.  I read and used Gun a Dog by Richard Wolters myself but mine is a lab.  Get him on some wings and bird scents as soon as you can.

Both. Realistically mostly a family dog. Weekend hunting etc.

Jealous, just lost mine of 7 years.  Great dog and best bud.
Is the breeder local?  Can you pm me his contact info please.
Get some toys and start playing fetch, and just keep going till he almost drops and use bird scent on them, this will get him started looking.

Sounds like you have some major studying to do. You can screw up a bird dog in a hurry. Do a bunch of research and then start training. Some of the stuff that is comen sense for gundog guys is not for newbies. Like don't teach them to sit. Controlling their every move, being heavy handed or shock collar can ruin them. I am a newbie and these are some of the things I picked up. I decided to have my dog trained rather then risk screwing her up. Glad I did. I had enough to learn on my end being a new Hunter in Washington. My time Hunting with my dog is enjoyable as she does everything I had hoped for when I got her.

I've read a few books. He isn't sitting or playing tug. Depending on how much time I have I may have him trained. Thanks for your insight. It sounds like you were in my shoes not too long ago.

Nice looking dog I invested in a trainer and it was well worth it to me. My trainer was out of Fall City. Had my boy for month and a half or so. They(the trainer) have to establish to your dog he is the new boss so they will learn thus you wont be able to just stop by and visit. You are going to have loads of fun with your Brit I know I do.

Skip the book by Wolters for pointing dogs.  It's a horrible book for pointers.  I know nothing about his retriever books, but his pointing dog book is a joke.  Wolters wasn't a trainer.  Go online and purchase the video series "perfect start/perfect finish".  It's as good as you will get for pointing dogs.  Good looking pup, have fun with it.

It's a crying shame a city the size of Seattle no longer has an active pointing dog club.  I live in Tacoma but still belong to PortVan (Portland/Vancouver) pointing dog club, even after ten years living in Tacoma, because there is no other option for monthly fun shoots like we have there, that I know of at least.   So, I end up driving all the way down to Scappoose, OR once a month from March through July just to get my dog on some birds.  We just had a fun trial yesterday and it was a great time.   My setter absolutely loves it.
