I agree with your sentiment.   However, lottery odds don't change based on total ticket sales.  Raffle ticket odds are determined solely on total ticket sales.

Which play out in favor of any who enter the raffle. Knowing that someone WILL get drawn rather than drawing a number that has no winner (like lotto)... I think its about as fair as a raffle can be

Funny that no one complains about lotto being unfair under the same no limit ticket sales. Only when people want their better odds of getting tags do funny issues come up like this  :chuckle: :dunno: Everyone wanting the "fair" road should stick to special permits apps where everyone pays their 6 bucks and to get in the point pool and wait in line like everyone else.

No one is making anyone buy tickets, and its ironically the guys who buy the least tickets or none at all that have the most to say. Everyone who buys a ticket knows and or can see the odds of drawing when they purchase tickets. Dont like it, dont buy a ticket hahaha how hard can this be lol I think all of you guys complaining are forgetting the #1 goal of these raffles.... get ready... to make money for conservation of those species. Why would any agency put a cap on the amount of dollars it can raise? Kinda defeats the whole purpose of having a raffle and trying to make as much money possible for each species.

Do you same guys complain to the guy next to you dumping a couple grand on the RMEF banquet raffles? NO WAY so it baffles me this any different. Matter a fact most people go over to congradulate and thank those people for their large contributions to wildlife conservation. At the end of the day its a govt ran raffle and for that reason certain people will try to make this raffle equally fair for any guy who wants to enter bc they are more focused on their odds of winning the tag rather than raising money for wildlife.  At that point why not just make a 1 ticket sale limit and let WDFW increase their license and tag fees to get the rest of their funding they would loose from having this new capped raffle sale. Raffles make a huge chunk of cash for the WDFW and when that cash is gone they will figure out a way to get it back, and guess who will be on the receiving end of that? Then lets see how people feel about the raffles hahaha might not be so bad afterall

Politically "correct" these days is a little crazy bc most people who support it do so for their own benefit not bc it makes the most sense.
Ummm.... go to the O.P. No one is complaining. Opinions were asked and given. That was the purpose of the thread I believe.

I buy more or less year after year.  Some years I buy one in each category and some years I buy many in one and not others.  I don't like the fact that someone who has unlimited funds can buy unlimited tickets because that is unfair to me.  But someone else probably doesn't like the fact that I could afford 100 or more of a ticket also.  Regardless of what I like or not, the more money we can raise in the raffle the better for all of us.  I see some places where they have a cap on tickets and they raise 1/2 to 1/10 of the money they could.  In the world today we are fighting an uphill battle vs the anti hunters and the more $ that we can have on our side the better. Most, not all, hunters don't want to donate or spend an extra dollar or minute.  I believe most hunters to be the greatest citizens in our country. I see our guys all the time who between them and their wives make at the higher range of middle class money that I try to get to sign up for NRA, RMEF, Mule Deer memberships or donate to a cause , etc. These people every year say maybe next year. So the average guy will not even pony up $25-45 to get the name on the roster for 1 hunting and conservation organization? There are roughly 100,000 elk tags sold in the state and roughly 17,000 RMEF members. So if the rich guy is not the one funding us; then how are we supposed to keep our hunting heritage if the average guy wont step up?

BINGO!  Well said.  I particularly like the comparison about someone buying a fist full of raffle tickets at an NRA/SCI/RMEF/WSF banquet and no one getting bent out of shape.  This is exactly the same thing with no guarantee of outcome but for some inexplicable reason people get worked up about it every year.

Regardless of format, WDFW's singular objective is to raise money for the conservation of species.

  • Auction Tags: Everyone can bid. The sky is the limit with a guaranteed outcome for the winning auction bidder. This is fair to anyone willing to wave their bid number at the auctioneer.  This usually, but not always, raises a lot of money.
  • Raffle Tags: Everyone can buy them. The sky is the limit with no guarantee of outcome for anyone that buys one or even a majority of the raffle tags. Everyone understands this and it is therefore fair to everyone willing to buy raffle tickets.  This usually, but not always raises a lot of money, but less than the auction tag since there is no guarantee of winning.
  • Special Permit Applications: Everyone is limited to one per category with no guarantee of outcome, regardless of how many points they have built up over the years.  This invariably raises the MOST amount of money because it effectively forces people to put in or buy a point every year if they want to continue increasing their odds for future draws. One could actually make a valid argument that having to pay to enter the draw every year even though you already have amassed points for the express purpose of entering future drawings is unfair, but let's let that sleepy dog lie for now.  ;)

Outside of these limited options for raising conservation dollars with the chance of winning the rare opportunity to hunt something you are really interested in, fortunately everyone has three more choices that they can do:

  • Hunt OTC DIY in the general season of their choices(s) with the weapon of their choice and in the manner of their choice for deer/elk/bear/whatever.
  • Hire an outfitter or guide to hunt OTC or OIL-type critters in this state or elsewhere.
  • Sit at home on the couch with their Bernie Sanders blow up doll and pout that life ain’t fair and the world is mean.

In each and every instance except the very last bullet point, everyone has to make their own way in this world and work hard to earn enough money (and time) to participate.  It ultimately all boils down to how bad one wants to participate.

I buy into most raffles. It doesn't matter the odds or if the raffles are capped as I know first hand it only takes 1 ticket to win.
me too, just like the lottery, can't win if you don't play.  I kinda like the idea of a cap but I also like the money it raises, I just hope it goes towards that specific group of animals and not into the general fund.  Please don't tell me if it all goes toward the general fund!!  My friend won the east side elk raffle back before there were different categories, he bought one ticket.  Killed a 348 bull
“In common with”..... not so much!!
