What bouy for crawdad traps?!
« on: June 02, 2016, 07:47:17 PM »
Just bought a few crawdad traps, and I'm not sure if in good to run red and white crab bouys, or if I can/should use something else?

Gotta grab something in the am on my way out of town

I had traps stolen so I quit using them but if you're going to baby sit them I'd use small crab bouy's with my name and # on them.   Maybe less likely to get picked up if a person seen a bleach or soda bottle might think it trash.

I used green 550 paracord and tie it off to the shore or a log hanging out, very difficult to see.

My plan was to use milk jugs, regs say you can't use them though, unless I'm interpreting the regs wrong.

What do you use to retrieve the pull line if no bouy is attached?

I've got a throw grapple to snag the line but normally I'm in a boat and just reach overboard and grab the line tied off to a log or branch or on shore to something.

In flat mud bottoms I'll tie two traps together with 30 to 50 feet of line and toss them both out then snag the line between them with the grapple when it's time to pull them in

550 cord tied to a 2 liter pop bottle pitched up on the bank like trash and then tied off to appoint on the beach so it doesn't float off. Put a couple of bank sinkers on the line to help it not float. You could always run the line through a float when  you got ready to pick it up.

unattended is the key, if you're using simple floats (soda bottles etc)  then you can't leave them unattended.

I use a fishing net float with my info on them.  Also, I use longer para cords so I can run them to the bank and conceal the setup, still legal that way.

We have best luck with overnight soaks so babysitting them is not an option for us.

Good luck!
