Youth Doe Hunt Opportunity - Seattle Puget Sound SCI
« on: June 03, 2016, 08:40:31 PM »

This year at our annual Seattle Puget Sound Chapter of Safari Club International Banquet and Auction (February in Lynnwood), our theme was all around youth hunting, we had a special paddle raise just to fund youth hunts.  There were many generous donations by the great people in attendance.  After our successful sponsored youth hunts last year, we decided to go to the same location again.  This year are able to fund up to 10 youth hunters on a doe hunt.

We encourage all interested youth to apply.  The youth hunters last year were all successful and had a great hunt.  Please see below for all the details!

 SEATTLE PUGET SOUND CHAPTER
of Safari Club International

Last year the Seattle Puget Sound Chapter of Safari Club International sponsored 4 youth hunters to go on youth doe hunts in Eastern Washington. After the great success this past year, we will be sending up to 10 lucky youth hunters on a deer hunting trip to harvest a whitetail doe in Eastern Washington.

This hunt was made possible by generous donations at our annual banquet that is held in February each year.

The selected hunters and their parent will be hunting on a private 500 acre ranch in Unit 108 approximately 20 minutes from the town of Colville, WA. There are multiple blinds overlooking alfalfa fields and timbered areas. The hunters will be dropped off and picked up from the blind. In 2015, these hunts had a 100% success rate!

The hunts will be for one whitetail doe and all of the field dressing and skinning will be handled by the host.

All interested youth hunters are encouraged to apply. The only requirements are that the youth hunter must have their Washington State Hunter Education Card, a 2016 deer license/tag, and a parent willing to accompany them on the hunt. These hunts will take place during the youth general modern firearm deer season between October 20th-23rd.

Lodging and food will not be included but there are hotels and services available in Colville, WA.

To apply, have the youth hunter send a brief essay describing themselves and why they would like to take part in this great opportunity! All applications must be received by July 15, 2016. Once all applications are received, they will be reviewed by the SPSC Board Members for approval. The youth hunters that are selected should expect to be notified sometime in the month of August.

Send essay applications to:

Ross Woods

8614 4th Pl SE

Everett, WA. 98208

Or email the essay applications to:

woods.rossb@gmail.com

This is a great deal. I sticky'd this. Hopefully a couple of the youth chosen for this are members of the forum and will share stories and pictures of their hunt here in the youth board. Thanks to SCI for making this happen.

What a great offer.  Thanks for posting.  Hopefully at least one youth from hear wins one of the hunts and shares the experience here for all to see.

Thanks SCI.

So far two youth hunters have applied so start spreading the word. We would like to fill as many of the 10 slots as possible.

The feedback from the kids last year was 100% positive and they all were able to harvest a doe.

Great offers by hoth the SCI and benhuntin. I wish my kids were a little older, but I'm still at least 6 years or so away from getting my kids into hunters ed. Hopefully other parents on this forum take advantage of this opportunity.

Bumping this up to the top for any of the parents and/or youth hunters who have not seen it. This is a great opportunity for our young  hunters put out there by a great organization.

My kids drew second deer tags so we won't be putting in for this.  It is great opportunity for kids to get out in a target rich environment.

Thing 1 drew a youth doe tag for 218 or I'd have her submit the essay.  Hope this is available again next year, especially if Thing 2 is able to pass Hunter Ed.  Great opportunity!  Thanks to SCI for putting this on.

Ross' reply "Thanks for sending me the application for your son. We should be selecting the final group of youth hunters in mid July. I will send you an email and let you know the results! We are still aiming to get 10 total youth out this fall.

We will be in touch,

Ross Woods"

this leads me to believe they still don't have 10 entries   :dunno:

Edit 4:58pm. - they have 8 applications at this time

Thanks all!  I talked to Ross yesterday and we had 7 applications. So yes with the last one we are up to 8.   Still looking for a couple more youth hunters!

We will keep everyone updated as we approach the cutoff date.

Can't wait to hear the stories and see the pictures from this years youth hunt.

As of last night we are up to 8 applicants.

Our board approved up to 10 hunts this year but if we get more than 10 applicants I plan to propose to our board that we increase the number of hunts to the number of applicants as long as there are enough availabilities with our contact who runs the hunts for these kids.

Keep 'em coming and thanks for the support here from the HuntWA site

Someone turned on the faucet - up to 17 applicants now (received three today).

Last year we struggled to get 4 youth hunters out and it looks like this year we should hit our goal of 10.

Thanks again to the support from this board.

Ding ding ding - the final submission bell has rung.

I received a volley of applications this week, totaling 23 total applicants.

I would like to thank the Hunt WA board again for the bumps and advertising. I said before that last year we only received 4 applicants and to see the applicant number grow six fold is a true testament to the power of social media and word of mouth.

I have fielded a few emails for when the youth hunters will be selected...

The committee to choose the hunters is currently going through each of the applications to make the final selection. Right now the plan is to choose 10 hunters and 2 alternates (in the event one of the chosen cannot go due to scheduling issues). Our committee will then present those names to our Board of Directors for approval at our August board meeting (next week), and I plan to send emails to all of the applicants with the results the following weekend.

Ok folks I just sent off a bunch of emails to all of the applicants (both successful and unsuccessful).

I would like to thank the HuntWA board again for promoting this, I think this helped spread the word.

We selected 10 youth hunters and 2 alternates in the event someone has to back out.

On a related note: I could not find contact information for two of the applicants. If anyone knows the Hopkins or Hinners families (they sent hand written letters so I do not have email contact) could you have them shoot me an email at woods.rossb@gmail.com so I can let them know the results?

Much appreciated, and thanks again.

It was a great time. All involved are first class people. Can't thank them enough. My daughter, (HockeyGirl) will do a write up at some point, once she is caught up on her homework!!

Have to chime in and thank those for the opportunity.  My son got to shoot his first deer, with his great grandpa's 1907 30-06 and his grandpa sitting at his side.  The kid will remember that morning for the rest of his life.
