Finally after 5 years
« on: June 02, 2016, 06:24:59 AM »
I haven't been able to hunt over my own dog since I joined the military because I haven't had the time with op tempos. After searching for the last year or so I was finally able to add a new addition to my duck huntin arsenal and family. I drove to California to pick up a chessie pup shes, not the first but will be the first I trained. I previously hunted with the chessies my dad trained. Shes 10 months old and full of spunk. The original owners didn't hunt or take her out much so good thing she didn't learn any bad habits. I took her to a lake while down there where she swam for the first time which took all of 20 minutes before she wasn't hesitant to retrieve the dummy. Got back up to my house here and threw the dummy at the river where she effortlessly swam across even with the current to retrieve the dummy. Now for the obedience training

I hear ya I used to have a dog when I lived in Ca and hunted the sac valley refuges all the time. My last season with her was my best totaling over 300 birds for her and me harvesting 189.

Congrats...you will be like many of us saying "If there isn't room for dog...there isn't room for me"

Its funny because only one of my buddy's I hunt with own a dog so it all works out.

Hope you both have a ball and enjoy some great hunts together.

A casual observation; Smart move keeping your pup on a long lead during early training.  Just a suggestion, make a long lead of floating line for water work.  Less chance of your pups paws and legs getting tangled in it if it's on top of the water.
Spent most of my $$ on huntin, fishin & retrievin dogs, the rest I just pretty much wasted.

Thanks. Yeah when I send her out across the river I hold the lead until the very end for that reason but a floating lead would definitely be better. luckily this one doesn't sink too fast and the current helps keep it away from her. I do look forward to taking her out this season I hope if she's ready. So far with the primer shells it doesn't bother her. Even when my neighbor was shooting his pistol didn't she doesn't seem to care.

nice looking dog!  sounds like you're probably just down the road from me.  i've got a boat but my dog's a lousy hunter(probably more of a reflection of her owner...).
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun
