Called in a coyote/ended up being a Bobby! With Video
« on: February 02, 2009, 09:27:45 PM »
Well after 2 minutes of calling and filming on a solo hunt, a nice coyote came in, I take aim with the glock 10MM squeeze off and send a big puff of hair flying.  Well it wasnt fatal.  The kicker, tonight after watching the video, I just relized it was a big ole Bob Cat, now Im pissed I didnt bring the shotgun, I cant believe it was a bobcat, this is the first one I have ever called in, Im pissed I missed.  Ill post the video later.  James

I had a model 23 when I stumbled on a coyote unexpectedly. I emptied the whole clip at him. It was hilarious. He was hauling some ass. I could see bullets hitting 3 and 4 feet behind him out at about 75 yards.

After watching the video, I am wondering if I should have looked/tracked a little longer but there was no blood, and just chalked it up to a miss, but it was definetly a hit, looks like through the left ear, must of left a hell of ringing noise in his ear from the hollow point Hydro shocks.  I dont think Im going to get over this, guess Ill have to get back out there this weekend.

Hey dead dog go bark up your own tree!!!!  Im pretty sure Im not in need of a hunter safety mentor.  But I do understand your concern, with the accidents in the last couples years.

Heres the youtube link.  The shot is a little before half way threw the clip.  Its hard to see with youtube, the puff of fur that flys from the side of his face.

That little guy was hard to see. . .all you could see were his ears and eyes!!! I'm impressed you did see him cause he wasn't really moving very much. . .it was just one minute he wasn't there and the next there were ears and eyes. . .

. . .he sure didn't seem to be in TOO much of a rush to get out of the area considering the rude awakening that he got!!!

All I have to show for it is a handful of fur :bash:  35 yards is a pretty longshot for a pistol though, Im kinda glad I didnt hit him especially in the head, with those hydroshoks there would have been not mount, some Im glad I missed for that reason.  Dam house cats anyways, maybe next time Ill get the neighbors poodle dog who keeps *censored*ting on my front porch and newspaper the other day. :dunno:

I think it was pretty obvious to him that it was a furbearing varmint that he was shooting at. . .

. . .just my  :twocents:

. . .and yeah you were pretty close, especially for using an iron sighted handgun. . .how far away was he when you shot at him. . .kinda hard to tell from the video because it looks like you were in a railroad right of way and there was at least one dip between you and him that you couldn't see from the video until you got up and walked over there. . .

35 yards, and ya I was on the opposite side of the railroad tracks.  We have killed several coyotes in the same spot, last one with the bow.  This weekend Im putting up a tree stand and going to start hunting it from a stand, since its so brushy I fiqure this will up my odds.  Never even heard him approaching all of a sudden there he was, he was pretty hard to see, he never gave me a side profile, It just look like a yote in the heat of the moment.

I think that a tree stand would be a great way to hunt coyotes and bobbies over here on the West side!!!

You'd have to have a remote E-caller to make it work the best but I think that being up above the ground would make it easier to go in after the *censored*s (which is pretty much what I'm thinking that I'm gonna have to do to get one over here on the wet side), gets you out of their normal sight plane, especially since they should be concentrating on the calls coming from ground level, and as a bonus it should open up your field of view. . .might wanna take some pruners with you though. . .plus I don't think you would have to worry about anything sneaking up behind you then either!!!

I say give it a try. . .I've never used a tree stand. . .go figure I'm from Southern Illinois the land of tree stands and I haven't used  one. . .I always used ground blinds. . .so I'm not sure how those climbing tree stands work, but for public land I'm guessing that would be the way to go so that you can take it with you every time. . .

I'd spend some more time out there looking.  My son and I tracked down a coyote a couple years ago that didn't bleed at all for the first 75 yards.  He hit it high, and too far back with his 17 Remington.  Little entrance and no exit.  One little tuft of fur, just like your video.  It only went about a 150 yards total, but it took us over an hour and a half on our hands and knees looking for more strands of hair, and disturbed leaves, sticks etc, to find it.  It didn't leave much of a trail.  Only found two drops of blood.  Out of all the coyotes, we've always remembered that one.

Tree stands.....I think you guys might be on to something there!
