idaho here we come..
« on: June 10, 2016, 06:47:38 PM »
So how many people from the looser lounge are going to idaho this year. I got nothing in the draw and i was feeling bad about it this morning, so i got tags for idaho deer season. Might as well have some fun. Congarts to everyone that draws something.

If I didn't have Idaho otc elk hunting, I'd just die.  Might also do Montana this year.

I'm heading to Idaho also, but not as a last resort. I buy an OTC archery tag and it's a better tag than the majority of archery tags you have to wait 10 years for hear.

I'll be scouting the Panhandle fairly heavy this year for elk.  Maybe make it down towards McCall too.  I really want to hunt elk over there but I don't want to go in blind.

Going blind makes it that  much more fun..  I have been to idaho a ton just not for hunting..I was looking at the archery tags but got rifle instead. I'm going to Arizona for archery in January.

Used to be the bees knees for elk but due to predators and overgrown habitat the herd there is suffering

My buddy and I are heading to SE Idaho this year. We've never hunted Idaho before.

We are planning on heading over there in a few weeks to go check out the area and get a feel for the place. Gonna be a loooooong drive.

I wouldn't waste the time or money on a out of state tag for the Lolo zone.  It will be many years, if ever, before that area will be like it was in the glory days. A successful hunt would be just seeing a bull!

147 elk were killed in units 10 and 12 in the 2 months its open for hunting.   That's on par with what its been like since 2000.  If I was buying a out of state tag, I would look to the more productive units.  Check out the Panhandle or Dworshak units.
Not saying it cant be done, but if you have never stepped foot in that country, finding an elk will be very tough.  Its rugged, remote, and the elk that are there are very hard to locate.  Think of it like an eastside Washington any elk unit.  Sure a few guys get bulls every year, but how many more don't even see an elk.

I struck out on Idaho moose so I plan on going for deer or elk since I have the license.  The fly in hunts to the Frank Church are very popular so be prepared for company.  The deer hunts are slam dunk if going late but elk is another story.  Good Luck!
