2nd Deer Chewuch
« on: June 11, 2016, 07:15:57 AM »
My dad and I both drew this tag (whitetail doe only). If anyone has private land in the 218 with regular whitetail visitors and wants to thin a couple out let me know. We'd be happy to help out the mule deer heard by collecting a couple whitetails!

No takers huh? I kind of figured as much but it never hurts to ask!

There are FS roads up near Mazama (west of Winthrop 15 miles) that go up into 218 unit. Once you get higher up, the deer are almost exclusively mules, but if you are lower but still on the National Forest land, there are some white tail hanging out in the lower elevation forests. You could get those tags filled on public land.

When we hunted a friends late mule deer tag there a few years ago, we talked with some guys that had the late whitetail buck tag. They had talked with a biologist that had told them almost exactly where to find whitetail on state land in there, and they were seeing deer. Probably worth a shot.
I hunt, therefore I am.... I fish, therefore I lie.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated! We hunt that area and have for many years. We see whitetail on public land too but not many. We see a lot on private.I just thought it was worth asking for access to private land. Like I said though your responses are aappreciated!

Is that one of the private land only tags? I have drawn a second deer tag for the Mazama area a few times but it was only valid on private land as I understood it. I thought most of the second deer tags in the area are like that but I could be wrong.

Honestly most of the folk in the valley over there are pretty decent and you might have some luck just spending a few days knocking on doors in the summer months and asking.
