What is the best Elk call to learn on?
« on: June 11, 2016, 10:26:36 AM »
Ahhhhhh!  Finally drew a muzzy bull permit for 340.  I've never had the need to call for elk but this year I want to learn if I need to do it.  I'm a little stressed now because I never learned much about calling.  Looking for suggestions on calls for a beginner?

Both Phelps and Bearman make extremely high quality calls for very reasonable prices. I have lots from both. They're great.

Primos blue reed bugle and just about any open reed cow call were the easiest for me...you won't win elk calling championships but youl definitely kill elk

But everyone picks up stuff differently so maybe you'll figure out diaphragms faster....my experience has been learn how to make the call with open reads then switch to diaphragms later on but try everything !

What ever you get make sure it's so easy for you you don't have to think about when you are calling....calling in your car on the way to work is much different then in a bugle battle at 30 yards with a 1200 pound giant !! You don't want to be the guy choking on his reeds once things get cranking

Good luck

Want to do mouth calls to this year. Heard great things about Jasons. Have the multi season elk permit. Rick

Have you used a mouth plate? If not, the estrus cow calls work very well.

I'd learn a diaphragm call, buy many and practice in your  car ..Primos buggies work well and of course a Phelps call. Don't over call those  bull they  push cows AND  haul ass. The past few years they have heard a million hoochies.

Get ahold of Jason Phelps, as previously stated. I learned on the Boss and am more than serviceable after just a couple months practice.

I have a phelps colockum elk call.  I really want to be effective with it, and use it.  I'd like to have some options.
I've watched so many you tube videos already, and want to learn bugling also.  All tips and info welcome👍.

Thanks everyone.
