Whitcomb Island people think is a slam dunk.  It's not very big and has a 250 acre (guess) no entry area you have to stay out of.

Before you get your hopes up too much, I'd recommend looking up past success rates for the island.  Remember it's small, this also means that the pheasant, quail and waterfowl hunters may mess up your plans.....

I have hunted the island several times for deer. WDFW told me that the refuge side (west end) is only closed to bird hunters, and that it is ok to hunt deer. I would give them a call and see if that is still the case. The refuge pamphlet states that the refuge is only open on Saturday/Sunday and Wednesdays. WDFW told me that you could hunt deer everyday that you tag was valid for. It might be worth you time to call. I really enjoy hunting the island, there are some great bucks out there.

The refuge part of whitcomb is close to all access even just walking around no matter what time of year.. Always has been for as long as I have been out there and that has been over 5 years now. Best people to talk to about the unit is federal office by getting ahold of umatilla office and ask them they will know better than wdfw :twocents:

I had the tag a couple years ago and I talked to the refuge people and they told me the west end is only closed to bird hunters and you can hunt any day your tag is good for.

I had one of the archery tags in 2014. Lots of ticks, mosquitos, spiders, and rattlesnakes in the brush down there. I ended up getting a buck but it wasn't an easy hunt. Every spot I wanted to go someone was parked at. The deer I shot had tons of flees on it also so if you got one I wouldn't put it inside an SUV. I spotted and stalked the one I got. Good luck!
