Centralia mine disabled hunt.
« on: June 21, 2016, 12:27:45 PM »
My buddy's neighbor drew the tag not really knowing what he was putting in for (i know right  :bash:).  Anyone ever draw or have any info on the hunt?

I'm the wrong guy to help, but I've heard it's a good tag.

Hopefully you can get some help here.

Way back when, probably 20 years ago at least, I was hunting the Steam Plant release area on one of the elk hunt days. They had a bunch of tags that year, guessing 30-40. A line of trucks went in the gate. About an hour later shots began and it sounded like WWIII. A while later, the trucks came out with a flat bed stacked high with elk carcasses. Corky Smith was there, so my bro and I talked to him and got the story. It was all coordinated by the mine officials. They surrounded the herd and gave the signal. Every hunter tagged a cow with no hassles. There were lots of happy hunters at the parking area. They give out less tags each year now, but I think the basic plan is similar.

It's a guaranteed raghorn tag, like toutle or the old Margaret tag, he'll get meat...

Antlerless only, but apparently still one of the few remaing slam-dunk hunts.

Call the regional office for explanations.  It is a disabled hunt ran by a hunt coordinator.  Yes, it has a high rate of success.  Is it easy?  Depends on the level of disability.
I know that many are really not that disabled.  However, once you have been on a hunt where the act of getting out of the truck threatens the life of the hunter it takes on a whole new meaning.  Once you have seen the determination before the shot and the smile and or the exhaustion it will be an image that never leaves your mind.

Don't know the level of disability in this young huntress.  I do wish her the best!

I know a guy that says he drives hunters on these hunts.
He says it pretty much is just driving out and picking the elk, and then getting in position to shoot it.
He has a winch in the bed of his truck and just pulls the elk into the bed after the shot.
The elk are used to the vehicles and employees, so they don't run off.
I have seen his truck, so I know the winch story is true, but the guy has a lot of stories...
