That same guy also killed lots with an 06 and privately noted that the 06 was better.

All lies.

All of the 30-06's I have shot have loved 165 grain bullets of pretty much any manufacture, 180's not so much. I don't do .270 so no input there.

And my old 30/06 HATED 165s!   :chuckle:  Loved 150s and shot 180s fine, but 165s were ALL over the map!

It's a can't lose issue! I have killed elk with both. Both were extremely effective.

I love the 150 grain Nosler Partition in my Ruger 270!  I've killed many elk (and deer) with that combination.

I'm curious, what was it? I've shot a 1917 Eddystone, A-bolt and Remington 760 pump and they have all loved the 165.

It was a mauser 98 with an A&B barrel.  Sold it to a fella here on Hunt-Wa years ago.  Shot 150's great!

ballisticly both guns are almost identical... only difference is easier to find heavier bullets for the 06... that being said... the 150 grn is plenty for elk with a well placed shot, so it comes down to which rifle your son likes better..

I use the 180gr Federal V-shock with the Bear Claw's in my 06.  Seems to get the job done just fine.
