We shot Saturday morning in central WA. I did the shooting today, but Bridget is enrolled in Hunter Education next month. A chuck shooter relies on their spotter and she was tops Saturday.
I keep saying it, get your kids Leupold Yosemite 6x32s they are simply the best binocular out there for kid's. Brilliant bins, and the super deep depth of field makes them really forgiving. Bridget was spotting chucks like a champ.
I didn't get "Big Fattio" because I was not listening to my spotter and she had Big Fattio sitting pretty and begging for a bullet when I took another chuck that was to the far left. Dad... you told me that the shooter has to listen to the spotter and if you had been listening....
Anyway, early on she ask: Dad, what animal has a body kinda' like a dog, but a head like a cat and moves like a cat and has a beard and pointy ears and his face is all smooshed?
That's a bobcat, where is he? That's what I thought it is - he's sitting right behind that big rock now. He is looking right at us. Which big rock? That one right there, he's looking right at us. Oh there he goes... and all I caught was a quick glimpse on the east end of a westbound cat headed for the tall grass.
She cleaned her binocular on the ride out and daddy didn't bother cleaning his before we started hunting. Boy did I get a lecture about taking care of my equipment after I couldn't see either Big Fattio or a bobcat that was sitting no more than a buck fifty from us.
That is the last time I don't take time to clean my binocular the morning before a big hunt! I've learned my lesson.
It is the tail end of the season and this was probably our last chuck shoot this year.
She claims she is going to shoot Big Fattio with her rifle next year and then daddy has to pay to get him stuffed w/glass eyes and a rubber tongue.
We shot for two hours, got nine shots and killed seven chucks. All of the shooting was done w/17 Hornet Contender carbine.
FYI, the upper left corner of the last pic has a permanent sign in it that identifies where we were shooting Saturday. I don't disclose where my chuck colonies are... ever.
