Cow elk shoulder question
«
on:
June 17, 2016, 07:13:53 PM »
I drew an antlerless elk tag this year and my wife informed me that if I get an elk she is expecting me to have it mounted (she has sisters but they don't like the outdoors, sorry). I tried to do a Google search of cow elk mounts but couldn't find a lot. Can you use the same forms as for a bull?
If anybody has any pictures of some I would love to see them for ideas and I would also like to know general dimensions of the finished mount if anybody knows that. Hopefully come this November I can put all this info to use.

Jp
Here are some photos of a cow elk shoulder mount I did last year. Kind of a project that I always thought about doing and she actually goes to a variety of outdoor shows and events like the RMEF banquets. They (cows) look AWESOME next to a bull on a wall. The forms are completely different and there are only a few taxidermy supply companies that offer them. A trophy is not always defined by length of tines or width of beams, but rather the memories made and the experience with others. I applaud you inquiring about a cow shoulder mount for your upcoming experience. Best of luck! Msg me if you have any other questions.

Heres a pic of her at the RMEF Banquet in Chehalis, WA with another one of my bull mounts for a customer.....just to give you an idea of what they look like together and size differences.

good stuff! If my daughter decides to hunt this year and kills a doe, I'm thinking of having it mounted.

How do you measure trying, you do, or you don’t.

And mount the butt and put it on the back side of the wall, that would look cool.

It looks like the cape doesn't go as far back into the shoulder as the bull mount. Does it require the same caping method or do you not need to be so far back? I only ask because my wife's uncle offered make a rifle sling out of the leather for me and possibly something else if their is enough left over.

yes, it requires the same caping method. The form goes back almost as much as a bull it just looks as though it doesn't because of the depth of the brisket of a bull vs a cow. Don't worry, if you want some leather then your will have plenty left over even with caping for a shoulder mount.

Her exact words were "why shoot it if you aren't going to get it mounted?". No joke, I was going to tan the hide and call it good, she got mad at me when I told her that lol.
I don't know how I ended up being so lucky.
