Opinions on Peep sights

Well, I've gotten to the point where my eyes seem to be having a bit of an issue with the sights I'm using. Its a simple focus problem and I have seen a few similar posts regarding this issue and getting around it with a peep sight.

I am shooting a TC BlackDiamond 50, with original fiber sights. I shoot ok on the range, but in the woods I seem to have an issue. Missed a fine fat doe on the last day of the season at around 70-80 yards. Anyway, I would like to get some opinions on peep sights from those using them and specifically anyone using them on a Blackdiamond. I have read a bit on this site and I know that some of the sights require some work due to height issues. There also seems to be an issue with some regarding aperture size. All information would be appreciated so I can make a decison. Thanks in advance.

In addition to peep sights, consider a front sight like the Truglo globe or the Pedersoli front globe.

I have the same eye issue.  I recently installed this sight on my Knight Bighorn.  It works fine but somehow it just doesn’t seem right.  I know you are supposed to automatically center the front sight in the circle but I just don’t trust it yet.  It shoots pretty good groups so I’m sure it is just a matter of practicing and getting used to it.

The standard aperture seemed too big to me to be accurate so I installed a target aperture which is overall bigger but has a smaller hole.  It helps with the trust issue but the hole is too small to be useful in a hunting situation.

    I have never tried peep sights for hunting because, I would think that it would make it harder to locate the animal in darker conditions ?  I have used them target shooting at the range where the light is always good and they work great.
   A few years ago I changed the sights on my Knight to the factor recommended tru-glo sights. After shooting with them at the range,I found that I had a hard time getting a tight group. So off comes the new sights and back to the old ones. I get much better groups with a finer smaller sight.

I have used Williams peeps for a while. They have different aperture sizes/styles you can try for the best centering or light or whatever. I use a globe style front with interchangeable inserts- love the crosshairs!

I took off the fiber optics on my CVA hunterbolt about 9 years ago, and switched to a steel front post that had a fiber optic insert (wanted something tougher than the stock plastic sight), and a Willams Peep in the rear.  My accuracy increased substantially.  No problem hitting a tennis ball at 100 yards off bags.  I've tried it without the small aperature screwed in, to see how it would work in low light, and was surprised that my eye would center the shots pretty good.  It definitely works fine, and I would always prefer a peep.  I just wished there were better peeps available (like a military peep with click adjustments).

I love my peep sights.  I shoot at a 6 inch target at 150 yds and will hit it every time.  It will make your gun way more accurate.  I shoot a TC Black Diamond 50 cal and the original sights sucked.  THey are way too fat and anything beyond 100yds just completely blocked it out.  WIth the peep you wont have this problem.  The downsides to it is it is slightly tougher to aquire game if they're running and they take a little bit of getting used to.  Expect to shoot like crap the first couple of times you go out there.  After this though you will notice a remarkable increase in your accuracy especially your long range accuracy.  I highly recommend it.  I have a williams peep sight.

I have hunted deer with a muzzlloader since 2004 and some elk hunting with one before that.  I really enjoy it.  I recently bought a CVA Elkhorn Pro that I have the same problem with discussed here; the open sights suck and I am considering going to a peep as many of my friends like them.  I have used williams peeps on high powered rifles in the past with good results.  Where did you buy yours and what was the cost with installation??

I shoot a Williams peep sight.  Here is their website.  Just scroll down until you come to the style of muzzle loader that you have.  They will ship it to you and the sight costs about $37.  It's super easy to install.  I'll caution you though; do not expect instant results.  I shot like crap the first 2 times I took it out.  The 3 I shot Okay and then the fourth time I shot awsome and by the sixth time I took it out I was hitting a six inch metal plate at 150 yds every time.  So it'll take some time to get good with it.  I almost made the mistake of giving up on it.  Glad I didn't though.

So Logger,
Are you shooting the Williams sights as well. I have looked at these and also at the ones offered at Cabelas. I noted that at Cabela's there is both a low profile peep and a hunting style peep that appears to ride quite a bit higher.

I was wondering if anyone had any experiece with either of these? I guess I need to get my butt down to Cabelas and check these out in person.

two questions,   does anyone have a pic of a williams site mounted on their rifle?  Do you have to modify the front sight as in lifting or lowering to balance with the new rear sight?
