gun for moose

I drew a cow moose permit and have access to several guns.  1. a 325 wsm, 2. a 300 ultra, 3. a 270 wsm and 4. a 300 win  mag.    which should I use?  I am 75 and cant see very well but am in very good shape.  thank you.  mike w

All those will work just fine. Shoot the one your most comfortable with.

Whichever one you feel most comfortable with. I'd assume with poor eyesight you will be getting fairly close to see for a shot, any of those guns will take down a cow moose with the 270 being the last of the 4 choices.

 It's all about shot placement, my grandmother killed a couple big bulls with her .243, use whichever you can can shoot the best.

I used a 270.  Like others have said, you got plenty of fire power.  Shoot the one you are comfortable with

I'd use 30 cal or up, but all will work fine.

But I would be darn sure to use stout bullets like Partitions or something else that will hold together.

Wife killed hers with a 308 and 180 grain factory corelokts, it wasn't my first choice but was a backup gun.  Did very well, I'd have no hesitation.  Shot placement is key.

I'd use the 325 if I were you.   Only because you don't have a .35 whelen listed.  : )

   All of them will knock a moose down.  You can use the .270 WSM with confidence, just use a good bullet.  Congrats on the moose permit!

As said any of those is fine. Elk are tougher than moose, I've taken 2 moose, both went right down...Use a bow!

  moose are relatively easy to bring down. Use whatever you like. If you like the 270 go for it! Shoot it in the lungs and bring it home!

Son took his first with 325 wsm. They do kick!
I wouldnt use the .270. A 30-30 works too but if something happens you will be kicking yourself forever. Not so with your other options.

Does the .325 kick more than the ultra?

Don't use a rifle that you aren't comfortable shooting, due to excessive recoil or any other reason. The 270 will work fine. However, it would only make sense to use one of the 300 magnums if you can shoot one of them as well as the 270.

  the 325 kix the most and I have a bad habit of flinching.  the 270  wsm is the only gun in the list that is mine, tats why I am leaning to it.  but this is an interesting topioc.  so keep them tips coming.  all the rifles have limbsavers on them.  mike w

Sounds like you need a new .308 AR10.  Less kick than any of those listed. And, it's an AR, so there's that.

I get much more satisfaction from hunting with a rifle that is mine, so in your case I would definitely use the 270 WSM.

Just be sure to use a good bullet and it will do just fine.

I don't even notice a kick from my .300 win mag when I kill something, it dropped my moose with one shot.  I'd take the .300 and not worry about a thing.  Have fun!

But really a moose isn't much harder to kill than a deer. A bullet through the lungs and it does just like anything else. 
The likelihood of a follow up shot is high also so take what you like best and shoot till it lays down and doesn't move!

I have never noticed a rifle kick when I am shooting a animal (elk,deer,moose,turkey,etc)

+1, I double lunged mine with a 380gr arrow/broadhead combo, no idea why so many think you need a .30 caliber thumper to hunt moose with.

A 130gr Partition from that .270 will kill anything in the lower 48!

  Take your 270 wsm good quality bullet. Cook'em in the vitals and you will be fine.

Because they don't hit the boiler room.  They start with the shoulder or neck first.  The boiler room is plenty big, so not sure why they don't hit it.  I agree with the .270

I have killed twenty plus elk with a bow, and know for certain you don't need large caliber rifles to snatch the life out of deer, elk, bear, or moose, but!!!!!!!! I just like the thump of a 340 Weatherby for large game. Than said, a 270 win with a well placed quality bullet is plenty for even the largest of moose.

My thoughts are bullet placement is more important than cartridge size.  Use what you are comfortable with and reload with/or buy factory ammo with an appropriate bullet.

I'd go with the .325 with the heaviest bullet you can get for it.  Just me though.

When I lived in Alaska I remember my dad and his buddies coming back with a couple moose every year. They all used .270 win and 150 gr partition.

ok...i'm gonna be that guy but it is legal so get over it....in your post you said you were 75 and i appreciate you getting out and hunting (I wish i had some of my elder relatives i could still hunt with).  I'm guessing you will have others with you to help in the recovery of your cow moose.  My advice is to shoot the biggest caliber you can handle with PREMIUM bullets.  There should be no reason you can't shoot a cow on the road or just off the road--regulations says you cant shoot NEGLIGENTLY from the road.  Shoot her high in the shoulder just under the spine and she will drop in her tracks.  a follow up shot may be needed but it beats your hunting partners bushwacking for a lung shot moose.  Good luck and congrats on the draw---that should be some of the best wild game you can eat

All calibers that you mentioned are $$$$ in their own rights but choosing the rifle that your most comfortable with packing around and shooting from all aspects, That's the one you should focus on and get completely comfortable with between now and you hunt.  Good luck.
