Stoeger Coach Gun Questions

Anyone know anything about these? I love my Stoeger semi-auto for trap and turkey, but my wife isn't big enough to shoot it. I was looking at the Stoeger Condor youth model over and under in 20 gauge for her but saw this coach gun for under 300 new and wondered if anyone had any insight. My wife is just over 4' 10" and whatever I buy her has to stay fun or she won't shoot it. Do these kick much? I've never shot a side by side. Thanks

Just sold one, 12 gauge Silverado.  They kick pretty good with buck and slugs. And the action should be slicked up to make them enjoyable shooters.

Thanks. She would mostly be shooting 7 1/2s and 8s with it. Just want her to have something to shoot clay pigeons with. The price was right but I wish they had it in 20 gauge for her.

I seem to recall them being available in 20 ga., at least at one time.  But I also seem to recall mine shooting extremely low at 20 yards, but that was with buck and slugs.  I can't recall ever shooting 7 1/2s and 8s with it.  My main worry after recoil would be the stiff action (cock on opening) with the internal hammers on the stoeger coach guns.

In the same price range, I picked up a used 20 ga. 870 youth for my boy(s).  It is light as a feather and has interchangeable chokes.  New, I imagine that they would not be much more than the Stoegers.

Yes, they do.

The newer ones come with a better than average reciol pad. I shoot a long fowler 12 SXS as one of my sub gauge guns. No issues with 1 1\8 oz of #8 or 7 1\2 shot,  a buddy has an O\U 20 that his daughter is using an again no issues.

The one I shot had a hard plastic butt plate, no recoil pad.

The laws of physics always apply and while a recoil pad will help, this is sub 7lb, fixed breech gun.  It will kick as such.  20g being a bit lighter will kick harder than the 12g for a given load (same shot weight and velocity).   

It would not be my first choice for a small, recoil shy person.


Edit - I watched the video and it does show a recoil pad.  Still wouldn't be my 1st choice.

A nice recoil-eating semi with screw in chokes would be a good all around gun for your wife.   Don't make price your first concern on a shotgun and find out you've pounded the heck out of her.  Make felt recoil and heft of the gun the main concerns and you should end up with a wife that shoots with you.

Good advice. I just thought I'd feel dumber not asking and finding out later this was the "perfect" gun for her. Sounds like it isn't. Big 5 in Puyallup is almost giving away their lower end guns right now, (which is all of them). Appreciate everyone's input.

My wife is 5 feet/100lbs. bought her a Remington 870 youth model 20 gauge. 20 inch barrel screw in chokes, $325.00 used but like new. It will shoot 3 inch if you wanted.

This is the Stoeger line that I was referring too. It has the better pad and if the 20 is like the 12GA it may use Invector Chokes.

If you want a auto-loader you could look at the Stoeger M3020, it's a 20GA. I have shot this model in a full length and it's worked fine for me. I shot the Benelli/Stoeger rep's (he is a friend) try guns at SST last month.

I actually really liked the youth gun in your previous post. Thanks for the help. I have the M2000 for myself love the gun. Shot my first turkey with it. Too big for the wife. Also I wanted her to get something that was easy to load and didn't take any real thinking.

Thanks Carl. I thought about the 870 for a good while. My buddy has one in 20 gauge and we went and shot it. I liked it but she didn't. So the search continues.
