Hunting mentor program?
« on: July 03, 2016, 09:23:42 PM »
Is there some sort of mentor program, official or unofficial, on the forum? I thought about this today because I see a lot of new hunters looking for suggestions and help. I was wondering if it was a plausible idea to set up some sort of ad hoc mentoring program?
I am by no means a master hunter or woodsman, but I've made plenty of mistakes and I had great mentors and friends to help me learn from them. Maybe there's a way we could set up a sticky thread and see if we could get a volunteer group to meet up with newer hunters and share some wisdom?

IIRC, it was discussed a number of years ago but was scrapped due to possible liability issues.

Well, that's a bummer, but I guess it makes some sense.

It sure seems like just about anyone who wants help gets help on this site though...wouldn't you all say?  I know @lokidog and many, many others have helped a lot of new people, and it seems like as soon as someone wants help (assuming they are not a jerk...ha ha) then people are jumping in offering help.  Seems like kind of an "unofficial" mentor program...

I agree with you, but I was wondering if maybe a more official system could be made. A way for in person assistance in a group setting.

The thought, in my mind, was something like an organized group scouting trip over a weekend or something. Essentially a simulated hunting environment or a practice for really new hunted to learn how to do some basic skills in a real life setting. I understand this is usually done by friends or family who are already hunters, but some people don't have that support system.

I was kind of hoping it might have been a way to get more people involved in hunting and then keeping them hunting and passing it on to others as they gain experience.
