2016 178 quality elk permit
« on: July 11, 2016, 11:01:50 AM »
Well I put in for 175 as my 1st choice and picked 178 for my second choice.  What do you know I drew a 1 or 2 tags in Peola.  So now I need to either secure some permission for some private ground.  There has to be some public land with elk.  But a bull tag is a bull tag I suppose.

Anyone got any ideas as far as public land go?  I have some time to scout and ask.

There is literally no public ground in 178 that holds elk. What tag did you draw?

Brian, some folks on this forum will flame you for applying for a tag without first securing permission to hunt.  I will not be one of those people.  I completely understand applying for a "Hail Mary" quality bull tag.  The early season tag (only one of them) is of higher demand than the later season tag (again, only one tag).  You might be the only person hunting at that time!!

I can't help you, but I wish you all the luck in the world.  Between 8 to 12 points are required on average to pull that tag.  Give it your best shot, please.

There is pretty much no public land in 178. There are a few feel free to hunt places but the elk are hardly ever on any of those pieces. If you don't know any of the landowner's or know somebody that does it is going to be a hail Mary to get permission. Some off the landowner's have friends that drew bull tags for riffle and muzzy and they aren't going to be giving any permission to anyone before these hunts. And other landowner's are not happy with the Wdfw and how they are giving special perks to Bennett lumber, so they are giving 0 permission. And then there are a few that charge an access fee.

I am not trying to discourage you just trying to give you a heads up if you are having a hard time finding permission.

GMU 178 is highlighted in yellow. White areas are private land; blue areas are state land; yellow areas are BLM.

Well I drew with 7 points, it should have put in for 181 as my second choice and not 178, but I have the tag and it's early sept so why not.
I always hunt the 175 unit and have taken a few cows and a spike.  But it's one of those things I will put in some time on foot see what there is. All I can do is ask for permission if I don't get any well then I guess that's how it is going to be.  All I can do is try

Your a like able enough to guy... Get down there and ask! Maybe you could stack all the haybales for someone to allow you access.

Good luck!
