6.5 creedmoor for hunting
« on: July 14, 2016, 01:24:47 PM »
I am looking at getting a new bolt action rifle. My buddies have been pushing for me to get a 6.5 for a while. What are your takes? I am a .308 guy because of how easy it is found and I also like to keep my caliber spread to a minimum. Anyone have experience?

I understand ballistics of long range but what about black bear at about 150 yds?

I've killed a couple elk and a pile of deer with my .260 REM (pretty much same thing as 6.5 creedmoor).  You shouldn't have any trouble dropping a bear at 150 yards with a 6.5 creedmoor.

Plenty for just about anything in WA at reasonable hunting distances.

Since you're a .308 guy you may want to consider the .260 as well.  .308 brass and a neck turner works fine.  I was bear hunting with a .260 when I shot the cougar in my avatar.

6.5 creedmoor with 140 grain bullet will kill anything in north America.  Fantastic round.     One of my next calibers will be a creedmoor.

308, 6.5CM, anything else... they'll all kill deer, elk, bear within reasonable distances with good placement. I've been thinking about a 308 lately, but I already have a 243 and 280AI

Love the 6.5 Creedmoor. Antelope, deer, elk, bear .............. it's all good. The choices in factory ammo seem to growing too.

I would go for the 308.

It uses cheaper ammo that you can often find on sale and I wouldn't want a specialty round rifle in a disaster or survival type situation. I stopped at Wal-mart yesterday and they didn't even have 17 HMR in stock. In an emergency situation you want a 308 or 3006 but I would go with the 308.

Love the 6.5 creedmore they are a accurate and honest round. I took one over the 6.5x47 to a PRS shoot a few months ago and was more than impressed 30-40 mph crosswinds and shots to 1300 I used the Hornady match grade ammo and finished in the top end of over 80 shooters. If your not a reloader and looking for ammo you can buy Hornady precision hunter with the 143 ELD-X from midway for $30.00 a box. If your a reloader your options are endless. The barrel life on them is unreal as well. Over the last few years I have seen elk, deer, pronghorn, and bear fall to them from 80 yards out to 1200 yards
Never to far, Just grab another minute!

The gun I am looking at is a 18" 6.5 that has a threaded barrel and I was planning on putting my omega on it.
