If elk are on the menu I'd choose a 270 or above.  Roosevelt bull elk are pretty big animals, and Murphy's law has a tendency to show up when your hunting.  If its the last day of your hunt and a "texas heart shot" is your only opportunity on a big bull, the bigger the better - IMHO.   :twocents:

Last day or not....that is horrible advise.

Good point, huge difference between .264 and .270
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Especially when both bullets are 140 grains.  :chuckle:

Unless you are shooting at over 1k yards or just want something different, I can't find a reason to go with the 6.5 over the .308.  The ammo is more expensive, the brass is more expensive and you can't walk into the hardware store in Ronan Montana and buy a box of 6.5 off the shelf.

The 6.5 is a fine cartridge if you want something different and it shines after 1k yards but every truck on the east side of the mountains has a loaded round of .308 rolling around on the floor somewhere.

The gun I am looking at is a 18" 6.5 that has a threaded barrel and I was planning on putting my omega on it.

Your 308 s are great medium range hunting rounds . If you want to step up to the 6.5 game I'd look at the 6.5 x284 with a 24 plus pipe to see the real benefits  of what it has to offer .

I see nothing wrong with a 6.5 Grendel as an elk gun!

I would shoot anything with a 6.5 Creedmor at 150 yards. Some incredible bullet selection. Load data shows it pushing 140-142 bullets between 2500-2750 FPS. A Hornady ELD or Accubonds Long Range at that weight and speed is far above the minimum for elk or black bear or anything on the continent for that matter.

It would be one of my last choices in the 6.5 family but it's still a 6.5

What gun are you running? Do you hand load? And if so what is your load data?

The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.

If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything.
